Avangrid is seeking a highly skilled and motivated Lead Transmission Planning Engineer to join our dynamic team in identifying and developing transmission system investments that will modernize the electric grid and support the ongoing clean energy transition. As Lead Engineer, your primary responsibilities will include leading and performing highly technical power system studies including modeling, simulations, and analyses to address system needs and support the company’s strategic vision.

Education & Experience Requirements

Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, or a related discipline, is required. Additional consideration given to applicants with an advanced degree and / or professional certifications.

Candidates must have a minimum of 7 years of industry experience related to the planning or operation of transmission and distribution power systems.

Major Role and Responsibilities

  • Collaborate, perform, and lead reliability and/or economic driven studies including voltage, thermal, PV, transfer limit, short circuit, and stability assessments.
  • Analyze and assess complex transmission systems at numerous voltage levels. Document and communicate results and recommendations as appropriate including data manipulation, report writing, and summary presentations.
  • Continually strive to innovate and integrate improvements to increase the precision and efficiency of transmission planning.
  • Strive to seek out and develop subject matter expert skills as necessary to mentor and support the team to aid in the advancement of business needs.
  • Collaborate and interact with internal teams and industry peers on regional activities (e.g. NPCC, ISO’s, etc.).
  • Develop and apply a thorough understanding of various planning criteria, guidelines, standards (e.g. NERC, NPCC, etc.) and analysis software packages such as PSS/E, TARA, and ASPEN.
  • Participate in transmission and substation site inspections; attend industry workshops, training, and user group meetings as needs arise.
  • Assists during storm restoration as assigned.

Technical Skills and Requirements

The following skills and associated competency levels are desired of those candidates seeking a position in Transmission Planning. However, offsetting industry and other relevant technical skills will be considered for candidates without previous experience in these Transmission Planning activities (e.g. T&S Engineering, P&C, etc.).

Technical Skills/Competencies

  • Software Proficiency: Expert-level capability with steady state power system modeling and simulation software (e.g., TARA, PSS/E, PowerWorld, PSLF, etc.). Additional consideration given to experience with a dynamic stability, short circuit, PV/QV, transfer limit analyses and software.
  • Regulatory and Compliance Knowledge: Strong understanding of Local, State, Regional, and Federal regulatory standards, processes, and requirements. Ability to comprehend regulatory processes/requirements and formulate an action plan to achieve results and ensure compliance.
  • Team Management: Ability to lead, and be accountable for, internal and external (consulting) staff toward a common goal. Includes the ability to organize, schedule, and lead a team toward the successful completion of commitments.
  • Communicating/Influencing & Engineering Documentation: Understanding and conveying ideas clearly and convincingly. Includes Written, Verbal, Presentation Development. Ability to adequately document and interpret engineering documentation, review and approve engineering work done by others.
  • Project Development: Understanding of the various considerations that relate to the scoping and development of preliminary project proposals. Ability to competently coordinate with diverse internal subject matter experts to develop robust and comprehensive project proposals.
