Elementary Community Outreach Worker
The Elementary Community Outreach Worker is a key member of the Sanford School Department’s student support team, responsible for building strong connections between school, home, and the community to promote student engagement, academic success, and overall well-being. This position serves students and families identified through the Student Assistance Team (SAT) process and other referral sources, with a particular focus on addressing barriers to learning and supporting vulnerable student populations, including those identified under the McKinney-Vento Act. This position is a one-year grant funded position for the 2025-2026 school year.
Key Responsibilities:
- Provide outreach and support in a variety of settings—including students’ homes, school, and the broader community. Flexibility to work before and after school hours is required to ensure meaningful engagement with students and families.
- Work closely with school staff to identify and support students experiencing homelessness, in alignment with the McKinney-Vento Act, to ensure access to educational stability and necessary resources.
- Conduct developmentally appropriate assessments with students and families to identify barriers to school success. Provide or recommend evidence-based supports and services to improve attendance, engagement, and overall well-being.
- Promote the development of protective factors and positive social-emotional skills through targeted outreach and supportive interventions.
- Attend Student Assistance Team (SAT) meetings to contribute insights, help develop action plans, and monitor follow-up support for identified students.
- Collaborate with members of the student support team, building administration, central office and community partners to coordinate services and align efforts in supporting student success.
Qualifications:
- Current Maine CHRC (fingerprinting) approval
- Licensed Social Worker (LSW) or similar experience preferred
- Strong communication, collaboration, and organizational skills
- Experience working with elementary-age students and diverse family backgrounds preferred
- Familiarity with trauma-informed practices and student engagement strategies a plus
- U.S. citizenship, residency, or valid work visa required
