Job Summary
Located in Brunswick, Maine, Bowdoin College boasts a student population of almost 2000. We make everything from scratch and are consistently rated in the top 10 for college dining! We have our own butcher shop, bakeshop, and organic garden that all supply food to our two dining halls and three retail locations.
We are seeking a Sous Chef/Assistant Chef for our Moulton Dining Hall. The Sous Chef/Assistant Chef will work closely with our Culinary Manager and Head Chef and will be responsible for daily food production and kitchen operations. Key responsibilities include:
- Overseeing food prep, service, and catering events
- Helping organize schedules and daily job assignments
- Assisting with staff recruiting, hiring, and training
- Making sure everything meets standards for food safety, sanitation, presentation, and overall production
- Reviewing production records and temperature logs
Pay, Benefits, and Perks:
- The hourly rate for this position is $26 per hour
- New employees in Dining will receive a $500 sign-on bonus (½ paid at first check and ½ paid after 90 days of eligibility requirements are met)

Education/Skills Requirements
- High school diploma or GED equivalent required; Associate’s or vocational/technical degree in culinary arts preferred
- Current ServSafe Food Production Manager Certification and ServSafe Food Allergen Training (or willingness to obtain upon hire)
- Working knowledge of basic cooking techniques and their application in baking and/or an institutional settings
- Excellent oral and written communication skills
- Excellent interpersonal and customer service skills
- Ability to problem-solve and prioritize tasks independently and within a team atmosphere
- Ability to remain calm under pressure and effectively engage with a wide range of campus constituencies
- A valid driver’s license and the ability to meet the requirements of the College’s Motor Vehicle Use Policy required
Experience Requirements and/or Equivalents
- At least 4 years of progressively responsible experience in food production and/or kitchen operations
- Experience in a supervisory or lead role preferred

- Work Schedule (Sunday–Thursday):
- Sunday: 6:00 AM – 2:00 PM
- Monday: 6:00 AM – 2:00 PM
- Tuesday: 11:30 AM – 7:30 PM
- Wednesday: 6:00 AM – 2:00 PM
- Thursday: 6:00 AM – 2:00 PM
- This is a full-time, onsite year-round position working 40 hours/52 weeks (1.0 FTE) with requirements to work occasional overtime, weekends, holidays, and during weather emergencies, in addition to major college events and weekends (i.e., Parent’s Weekend, Commencement, and Reunions).
