The Westbrook School Department is seeking an experienced, dynamic Assistant Director of Multilingual Programs to support the planning, implementation and evaluation of K-12 services for our growing population of Multilingual Learners (MLs). Collaborating with the Director of ML Programs, the Assistant Director will help to ensure compliance with federal and state regulations, promote culturally responsive practices and support educators in delivering effective, differentiated instruction. Currently, 24% of our total student population in Westbrook is identified as MLs, representing 41 birth countries and 26 different primary languages. The ideal candidate for the Assistant Director of ML Programs will possess a deep understanding of language acquisition, a commitment to educational equity and a collaborative leadership style that empowers educators and engages families.
Key Responsibilities:
- Understand pertinent educational research, policy and legal guidelines regarding ML Programming
- Assist in supervising, evaluating and developing staff
- Analyze and interpret K–12 student performance data to evaluate program effectiveness, identify areas for instructional enhancement and drive data-informed decision-making
- Support ML teachers in curriculum development, assessment strategies and differentiated instruction
- Collaborate with school and district administrators to integrate ML strategies and differentiation into the broader professional development initiatives
- Support the ML intake and identification processes, maintaining accurate documentation and ensuring compliance with federal and state reporting requirements
- Serve as a liaison with local and state agencies, legal advisors, and advocacy organizations to monitor and respond to evolving immigration policies and their potential impact on MLs and their families
- Foster strong communication with ML families, ensuring equitable access to information
Qualifications:
- Possession of a valid Maine 660 ESOL certification
- Minimum of a valid 045 certification (Assistant Principal) or comparable, administrator certification
- A minimum of five years of successful teaching experience within the multilingual field
- Demonstrated leadership experience in an educational setting, such as mentoring teachers, leading professional development or serving in an administrative role
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills to foster positive relationships with students, staff, families and the community
- A commitment to fostering an inclusive and equitable learning environment that supports all learners
