Job Title: Engineer - Non-Wires Alternatives

Reports to Manager of Non-Wires Alternatives

Office Location: Portland, Maine, Augusta, Maine, Orange, CT or Boston, MA

The base salary range for this position is dependent upon experience and location, ranging from $83,804-$109,518

  • Job Summary
    The Non-Wires Alternative Engineer is responsible for supporting and working collaboratively on the development, analysis, implementation, maintenance, evaluation, measurement, and verification (EM&V) of distributed energy resources (DER) which are part of the Non-Wires Alternatives (NWA) in Maine. This position will solve moderately complex problems and utilize best practices and knowledge of internal/external business issues to improve process, studies, or projects associated with the NWA scope of work. Specifically, this position will be responsible for:
  • Utilizes complex computer aided analysis tools to develop non-wires alternative solutions to known distribution and transmission system issues.
  • Apply the established distribution and transmission criteria and uses sounds utility engineering practices to support the identification of deficiencies in the distribution and transmission system.
  • Provide support to the Distribution and Transmission planning engineers on studies and analysis of new generation interconnection applications, mainly those involving NWA technologies (e.g. BESS, ESS, DERs, etc).
  • Work closely with the Distribution and Transmission Planning teams to investigate, configure scenarios and run models that can help to identify NWA technologies to address system needs.
  • Identify NWA opportunities through the application of suitable criteria to planned capital projects.
  • Perform engineering analyses of distribution/transmission system needs and technical review of potential NWA candidates for the issues identified.
  • Acting as the intermediary between the NWA team and other internal groups regarding progressing NWA projects towards execution and implementation.
  • Establishing and maintaining positive internal and external stakeholder relationships including those with regulators.
  • Interprets processes and standards related to Distribution/Transmission Planning and Reliability. Recommends solutions and best practices for standard and non-standard situations. Represents NWA Department on projects, task forces and studies. With minimal to moderate guidance, develop NWA reports and manage small projects/studies/initiatives or teams in accordance with applicable Avangrid guidelines.
  • Assist during storm restoration efforts.

  • Education & Experience Requirements:
  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Electrical Engineering or Electrical Engineering Technology required.
  • Minimum of 2 years relevant technical experience required (Industry Related).
  • Engineering in Training (e.g., EIT) or equivalent preferred

  • Demonstrated understanding of utility operations and positive stakeholder interactions (Projects, Regulatory, Investment Plan, Distribution & Transmission Planning, others).
