Job Summary

Bowdoin College presents a robust calendar of concerts each academic year, including student recitals, faculty performances, guest artist series, and ensemble concerts. These events showcase a wide range of musical genres and highlight the talent and breadth of the Bowdoin music community.

Bowdoin is seeking a casual House Manager & Publicist to join the team.

House Manager Responsibilities
The House Manager is responsible for managing box office operations, overseeing audience seating, and ensuring the implementation of safety protocols during music, theater, and dance performances. This role also supervises student ushers and box office staff, contributing to the smooth and professional execution of each event. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Coordinating usher training in collaboration with other departments
  • Training student ushers in crowd management, safety procedures, and customer service
  • Scheduling student ushers for specific concerts
  • Assisting guest artists with last-minute needs
  • Occasionally providing lobby refreshments
  • Occasionally overseeing merchandise sales


Publicist Responsibilities
As Publicist, the incumbent will oversee all aspects of Music Department concert promotion, both within the College and in the broader community. This includes working with guest artists and ensemble directors to develop program descriptions and—alongside student assistants—creating and distributing posters and programs for each event. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Compiling a list of semester events and sharing it with community concert patrons via email
  • Publicizing events through Campus Groups and the Daily Digest
  • Posting to local community online calendars
  • Connecting community members with specific musical interests to relevant department programs
  • Responding to public inquiries


The hourly rate for this position is $25 per hour.

Education/Skills Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent
  • Working knowledge of performance protocols
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills to promote events, respond to public inquiries, and coordinate with artists and department staff
  • Familiarity with tools and platforms for promoting events to both campus and external audiences
  • Ability to train, schedule, and supervise student staff
  • Excellent communications, organizational, interpersonal skills

Experience Requirements and/or Equivalents

  • At least 1 year of customer service and/or prior house manager or publicist experience preferred.

Standard Work Days and Hours

  • This is a casual, part-time, non-benefit eligible position working less than 19 hours/week.
