The Director of the Dental Hygiene program in the Westbrook College of Health Professions will lead the educational program that prepares students with a baccalaureate degree to sit for licensure and care for patients in the capacity of a dental hygienist. This include oversight of didactic and experiential instruction in the Coleman Dental Hygiene Clinic, UNE’s Oral Health Center as well as community-based experiences. The Director will work with the dean and other administrators and the dental community to meet Commission on Dental Accreditation Standards. Supervision of faculty and students to support best practices in the learning environment may include a variety of delivery methods including on-campus, hybrid or blended distance learning and on-line is required.

Responsibilities

  • Teach courses as needed in accordance with objectives of the course outline as set forth by the division using a variety of instructional methods and technologies that facilitates learning for all students.
  • Organize and present various concepts to a wide range of students with varying backgrounds and abilities, and adjust teaching techniques accordingly.
  • Assist in accreditation planning and program evaluation consistent with CODA standards.
  • Maintain cooperative relationships with professional personnel, local organizations, public officials and other relevant stakeholders.
  • Assist in maintaining public relations with the local community and take part in community relations when possible.
  • Actively participate in program promotion and recruitment of students, provide academic advising as needed, and assist in the placement and follow up of graduates.
  • Represent the College in the most positive manner with prospective, former and current students, clients, suppliers and the community.
  • Work closely with faculty and university administration to develop innovative curricular strategies and programming.
  • Work collaboratively as a subject matter expert to develop curriculum or provide discipline specific instruction within credit and non-credit areas of the college as needed.
  • Stay up to date with trends in the field and update program curriculum and equipment as appropriate to improve student learning.
  • Prepare for and report in the program review and assessment processes.
  • Attend career fairs, recruiting events and community events to promote the academic program, club and/or college.
  • Lead and/or participate in the advisory committee meetings, contributing to the meeting agenda and seeking input from advisors.
  • Facilitate professional development opportunities for dental hygiene faculty.
  • Be responsible for the organization, development, administration, evaluation, continued development and general effectiveness of the Dental Hygiene Program.
  • Assist with budget development and monitoring.
  • Assess program facility needs and maintain an inventory of equipment and instructional materials for the Dental Hygiene Program to meet current and future learning needs.
  • Other duties as may be assigned.

Qualifications

Dental Hygienist who is a graduate of a program accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation or a Dentist who has a background in the education and experience with Dental Hygienists.

  • A Master’s degree required. A Doctoral Degree preferred.
  • A minimum of three years full time industry experience as a Dental Hygienist or Dentist is required.
  • Certification or licensure requirements in the State of Maine or the ability to obtain license.
  • College level teaching experience is preferred.
  • Must relate well to students and colleagues, and create a learning environment conducive to student learning.
  • Must demonstrate a high degree of competency within the discipline to be taught.
