POSITION SUMMARY

The Phlebotomist serves patients by identifying the best method for retrieving specimens, preparing specimens for laboratory testing and performing screening procedures.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

  1. Performs venous access procedures on infants, pediatrics, and adult patients using a standard needle and syringe, as well as a multi-tube needle holder.
  2. Performs capillary access procedures on infants, pediatrics, and adult patients whether for direct testing of the sample, or into a blood collection tube.
  3. Maintains ample stock of all phlebotomy supplies.
  4. Ensures the patient sample meets the specimen requirements for all tests collected, sufficient volume for testing, the correct collection tube used, ensuring proper dilution factor for anticoagulated specimens.
  5. Demonstrates proper specimen handling.
  6. Verifies patient identity using two-factor identification.
  7. Maintains safe, secure, and healthy work environment by following policies and procedures; complies with legal and federal regulations.
  8. Documents results and maintains accurate electronic health record.
  9. Maintains up to date knowledge of laboratory requisitioning for appropriate billing documentation.
  10. Accurately labels specimens with date, time and initials, etc.
  11. Collaborates with laboratory vendor to complete training and stay up to date on testing changes.
  12. Runs reports on orders management to ensure compliance with closing the loop of the orders.
  13. Participates in all safety program training, drills and education sessions AND may include assignment to an emergency response team.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit and operate a standard computer keyboard and mouse for prolonged periods of time, as well as talk and hear. The employee is occasionally required to stand and walk. The employee may occasionally lift and/or move up to 10 pounds. Vision requirements include: close vision, distance vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus; position involves reading multiple handwriting styles.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

Work is performed primarily in a clinical setting of a busy medical health center. This position requires long periods of VDT exposure with proper office ergonomic mechanics. Work may be repetitive and employee should alternate tasks to avoid injury.

EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS

The following education requirements are considered essential:

  1. Phlebotomy Certified with two years’ experience preferred.
