Job Summary
Located in Brunswick, Maine, Bowdoin College boasts a student population of almost 2000. Our Dining Services Department makes everything from scratch and are consistently rated in the top 10 for college dining! We have our own butcher shop, bakeshop, and organic garden that all supply food to our two dining halls and three retail locations.
Bowdoin is seeking a Dishwasher/Dining Service Aide to join our team at Thorne Dining Hall.
In this role, the Dining Service Aide is primarily responsible for sanitation and general kitchen duties that support the overall operation. Specific responsibilities include:
- Daily operation of the dish room and pots and pans cleaning area
- Performing sanitation duties as assigned which include but is not limited to, sweeping and mopping floors, wiping walls, tables, and chairs, cleaning employee restrooms, all kitchen cooking equipment, refrigerated, frozen, and dry storage area, and loading dock area
- Removing trash and recycling
- Maintaining serving line supplies, including milk and beverage machines
- Washing and cutting vegetables and assisting in salad room.
- Stocking salad bar and deli areas
- Refilling and replacing condiments (i.e., salt/pepper shakers, napkins, sugar, and jelly)
- Stacking dishware, pots, pans, and glassware for service
- Occasionally assists with other kitchen and catering duties
Compensation:
- The pay rate for this position is $18.40 per hour, and this role is eligible for overtime and shift/weekend differential
- Shift Differentials: 10% for 2nd shift, 15% for 3rd shift, plus an additional $1.00/hour for weekend hours
- New employees in Dining will receive a $500 sign-on bonus (½ paid at first check and ½ paid after 90 days of eligibility requirements are met)

Education/Skills Requirements
- High school diploma or GED required
- Current ServSafe certification (or willingness to obtain within 6 months of employment)
- Ability to understand and practice recycling and other sustainability practices
- Demonstrated reliability as well as neat and clean appearance
- Ability to follow written and oral direction
- Commitment to customer service
- Ability to multi-task
Experience Requirements and/or Equivalents
- Entry-level position; no prior work experience required
- Previous work experience in restaurant, food service, hospitality or related industry preferred

Standard Work Days and Hours
- This is a full-time, academic year-round position, working 40 hours per week for 38 weeks per year (0.73 FTE). The role includes occasional overtime, weekends, holidays, and weather emergencies, as well as coverage during major college events such as Parents Weekend, Commencement, and Reunions.
- An academic year-round employee works from August through May and is not scheduled to work during winter, spring, or summer breaks.
- The regular work schedule for this position is as follows:
- Tuesday – Thursday: 1:00 pm – 9:00pm
- Friday – Saturday: 8:00 am – 4:00 pm
- Sunday: Off
- Monday: Off
