L.L.Bean is currently searching for a 2nd Shift Automation Mechanical Technician to join the facilities team located in Brunswick, Maine. The work schedule for this position will be Monday- Friday from 2:30p to 11:00p.
Position Purpose
Performs all automated maintenance functions on computerized stitching machines, injection molding machines, and CNC style cutting machines, requiring advanced knowledge of fluid power, electrical, mechanical power transmission, distribution, utilization, and control of electrical energy up to 480 volts AC. Serve as automation, fluid power and mechanical safety oversight resource across the company to leaders, engineering, project managers, risk management, etc. for any concerns related to equipment operation and repair safety in the workplace.
We operate and maintain an injection molding machine, producing rubber boot soles. Our CNC style cutting machines produce cut parts to be assembled into our iconic boots. Computerized stitching machines are then used to produce leather boots.
Responsibilities
- Fulfillment or Manufacturing Support
- Applies advanced knowledge of decision-making processes, precautionary techniques, job planning, personal protective equipment, and test equipment to recognize and avoid hazards.
- Provides second level support for complex problems to all departments for all things mechanically automated.
- Install, maintain, and support complex Kuka robot system, automated, pneumatic, cutting, packaging, sorting equipment, high speed sewing and production equipment, injection molding and carton and product transport systems and equipment.
- Performs preventative maintenance functions on a variety of complex industrial equipment as scheduled.
- Follows procedures and properly handles Universal Waste per state guidelines.
- Maintains accurate documentation of all new and existing installations.
- Acts as internal resource providing support and expertise required for projects and maintenance. May act as project lead. Oversees the work of automated equipment contractors and vendors.
- Applies computer skills to troubleshoot and repair automated industrial utilizing and adjusting parameter settings on (HMI, VFD and IO) controlled equipment.
- Collaborates with internal clients in support of new and existing technology requirements.
- Mentor and support and support all technicians, regardless of title and level.
- Identifies hazardous conditions or actions that may cause injury or property damage and ensures action to abate them.
- Assures appropriate communication of issues/problems to coworkers and leadership. Shares expertise in support of others to build technical and diagnostic strength in the team.
- Provides coverage at designated times as required to meet business demands and off shift shutdowns.
- Assumes additional responsibilities as assigned.
- This position has been identified as a safety-sensitive position. A safety-sensitive position is one in which an impaired worker constitutes a serious and direct threat to workplace health and safety. Employees in this position must agree that they will not come to work or be at work at any time under the influence of alcohol or any drug that could render them impaired.
- Technician with the ability to work on gasoline and or diesel engines, trailers, and all types of outdoor equipment. Must be able to diagnose and make repairs quickly, must be able to perform tune-ups, and oil changes on gas and diesel engines, perform brake work, mount tires, make trailer repairs, and have a working knowledge of electric systems and EFI.
- Performing routine maintenance tasks such as oil changes and tire rotation to ensure that company vehicles are running smoothly
- Repairing vehicles using various tools such as hydraulic jacks and pneumatic lifts
- Troubleshooting electrical problems such as faulty starters or alternators
- Experience with the following: diesel engine repairs, two-cycle engine repairs (lawnmowers, chainsaws, line trimmers, portable generators, leaf blowers, snow blowers, etc.), and heavy equipment repairs (tractors, rubber tire wheel loaders, snowmobiles, trailers, etc.),
- Ability to troubleshoot and resolve mechanical issues
- Strong organization skills and ability to prioritize and identify need for outsourcing major repairs along with ability to multi-task to meet deadlines and achieve desired goals
- Maintenance/Repair of small engine equipment including commercial mowers, chainsaws, blowers, trimmers; ability to train crews to perform field repairs if needed
- Valid driver’s license. This position requires the use of company vehicles which is contingent of passing a driver’s license background check. Drivers and operators of company vehicles will adhere to Driver’s Policy 3.13.
- Proficient with computers and systems including Microsoft O365, CMMS, and GPS vehicle monitoring systems.

Education Level: Highschool or GED; Vocational/Technical Degree is preferred but not required

Skills and Qualifications
- Industrial equipment maintenance experience required
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills both written and verbal.
- Advanced analytical and problem-solving skills
- Ability to create and maintain accurate documentation
- Knowledge and experience with NFPA 70E (Electrical Safety in the Workplace)
- Able to troubleshoot complex controls including experience adjusting and programming parameter settings with HMI’s, I.O.’s, VFD’s
- Ability to work with various 24-hour emergency support groups
- Experience reading hydraulic, and pneumatic schematics.
- Ability to collaborate at many levels internally and externally
- Self-motivated, able to work independently and provide guidance and support to JR technicians
- Valid state driver's license required
