Job Title: Controller

Location: Onsite in Southern Maine
Schedule: Monday through Friday, 40 hours per week (occasional early or late hours may be required)
Employment Type: Direct Hire


Controller’s Key Responsibilities:

· Oversee daily accounting operations including payroll, accounts payable and receivable, fixed assets, prepaid assets, purchasing, and general ledger

· Prepare monthly and annual internal financial statements and coordinate financial reporting

· Lead the development and monitoring of departmental budgets in coordination with the Director of Finance

· Ensure compliance with accounting standards and regulatory reporting requirements

· Manage monthly close processes, perform monthly cash transfers, and oversee electronic fund systems such as Fed Wire and ACH

· Analyze investment portfolio performance and make recommendations to maximize financial returns

· Coordinate internal and external audits and implement effective audit procedures

· Oversee preparation of reports for federal and state agencies

· Ensure appropriate insurance coverage is maintained and renewed on time

· Train, mentor, and support accounting staff to align with departmental goals and evolving needs

Supervisory Responsibilities:

· Directly supervise 13 employees across four functional areas: Finance, General Accounting, Purchasing, and Program Accounting

· Define responsibilities and performance expectations for staff

· Conduct performance evaluations, facilitate training, and provide motivation and guidance to support a high-performing team

Qualifications:

· Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or a related field required; master’s degree preferred

· Minimum of 5 years of relevant accounting experience, with at least 2 years in a supervisory or managerial role

· Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite, particularly Excel and Access

· Strong understanding of GAAP and internal control frameworks

· Experience with fund accounting or public finance is preferred

· Excellent analytical, mathematical, and critical thinking skills

· Strong communication skills and ability to clearly present financial information to both technical and non-technical audiences

· High level of discretion in handling confidential financial information

Work Environment and Physical Demands:

· Office-based position requiring prolonged periods of sitting and use of a computer

· Occasionally required to lift or move items up to 10 pounds

· Must be able to adjust focus quickly and work in a fast-paced environment

· Flexibility to occasionally work non-standard hours as needed

· Ability to travel as required for business needs
