The Medical Assistant provides support to medical practitioners providing patient care services in an ambulatory setting. Responsibilities include both clinical and administrative duties necessary to provide quality patient care in a medical group practice setting. Some of these duties include but are not limited to: assisting the practitioner in the performance of medical procedures, conducting follow up with patients on lab and test results, administering immunizations, and screening patient calls as needed, rooming patients, obtaining ECG's, preloading and confirming office appointments.

1. Demonstrates effective and courteous Customer, Physician/Practice Staff, and other hospital staff communication skills. Answers all calls promptly and courteously. Responds to and resolves issues promptly through effective Communications. Uses appropriate chain of command. Feedback is provided in a constructive manner. Participates in problem solving groups as requested. Gives accurate and timely patient care reports.
2. Refers patients to the Clinic Coordinator for follow-up.
3. Greets patients & families courteously & assist them when needed
4. Take accurate notes while witnessing the physician-patient encounter or while receiving dictation from the physician
5. Transcribe clinical information into the electronic medical record to document the patient visit, in real-time, for every patient evaluated by the physician
6. Helps administrative/office staff with sharing phone call coverage. Is proficient in telephone messaging per policy.

1. 100% documented evidence of attendance of staff/department meetings, and/or reading/initializing the minutes, all other memos and postings.
2. Collects, reviews and documents patient's current health status and history according to standard.
3. Is knowledgeable in preparing patients to be seen in the practice. Documents all aspects of the nursing service according to hospital and practice standards.
4. Performs and documents results of point of care testing and appropriate interventions, EKG's, visual acuity, audiometry, NST, tympanometry, peak flow, nebulizer treatment, pulse oximetry, wound dressings and ear irrigations are performed and documented per practice guidelines, (after orientation is complete).
5. Follow-up visits are scheduled at time of discharge, per protocol and Patient/Family, etc. is notified of next appointment.
6. Assist physicians with admissions by calling registration, call report to the Unit, photocopy all practice documentation to go with the patient, arrange transport. Completes all paperwork and sends with patient.
7. Accepts telephone orders within job description or delegates when appropriate, documents and reads back.
8. Performs ongoing patient screening, planning and implementation of patient care by effectively implementing the care, and teaching plan in collaboration with provider and clinical leader. .
9. Using Prescription Refill Line, refills routine prescriptions noted on medication list or refers to Clinical Coordinator for triage.
10. Participates in and/or delegates daily maintenance of working environment (e.g., cleaning, stocking of rooms).
11. Coordinates patient educational materials and ensures their availability.
12. Documents patient readiness to learn and barriers to learning.
13. Coordinates patient education meetings and projects
14. Duties are adequately performed as needed or seeks out supervisor for guidelines.
15. Orders, and inventories all state-supplied immunizations.
16. Ensures proper storage of state immunizations.
17. Ensures proper use of immunization logbook.

1. 100% compliance of: iCARE (complete annually at least seven days prior evaluation), Employee Updates, and any other in-services/meetings and training as assigned.
2. Maintains certification and BSL certifications. Maintains PPD, and blood glucose certifications.
3. Participates in multidisciplinary committee work that relates to unit of practice.
4. Demonstrates correct technique in the use of equipment, according to specific product information and policy and procedure manuals.
4. Follows appropriate procedure for obtaining and returning/cleansing/disposing of equipment and supplies.
5. Is responsible for unit cleanliness, maintaining a neat and safe environment.
6. Administers and documents medications, according to nursing policy and procedure following the 5 Rights: 1. Right Patient 2. Right Medication 3. Right Time 4. Right Route 5. Right Dose
7. Performs and documents results of blood glucose monitoring and appropriate intervention.
8. Ensures sterile technique(s) are maintained: Patient and room are ready when the provider arrives. Consent is signed and available. Room and supplies are processed according to EMMC Infection Control policies.
9. Ensures specimens are labeled and processed correctly per policy.
10. Appropriate patient education occurs post procedure.
11. Immunizations are scheduled and administered according to practice guidelines and documented. (if applicable)
12. Medication errors are reported to provider and supervision immediately
13. Adverse reactions are referred to provider ASAP - do ADR.
14. Walk-in patients are treated according to protocol.
15. Blood pressure checks are performed and documented per policy.
16. Patient Confidentiality is protected at all times.
17. Is responsible for logging refrigerator temps, eye wash station, check emergency lights and fire extinguishers.
18. Ensure practice adheres to TJC, OSHA, and EMMC policies and procedures.

1. Patient's fee ticket is reviewed before the patient leaves the clinic.
2. All medications and treatments are documented on fee ticket.
3. Organizes work to finish on time 95% of the time avoiding overtime.

1. Obtain enough contact hours per year to maintain certification in addition to in-services appropriate to area of practice in collaboration with the Lead Physician and Practice/Office Manager.
2. Has documented evidence appropriate to level of practice and certification.

* No previous experience required.

Credentials accepted: CMA, CCMA, RMA, NHA

* High School Diploma/General Educational Development (GED) AND successful completion of medical assistant program which includes an externship (MA work experience accepted in lieu of externship) OR 5 years of MA experience plus current certification
