Position Summary 

The EdGE Primary Youth Development Coordinator – Outdoor Programs, helps deliver Mission Downeast education, leadership, experiential, and mentoring activities to support young people and adults in personal and professional development. 

This position primarily supports school day, afterschool programs, and summer camps with a particular focus on students in K-8 grades and programs that use the Cherryfield campus facilities, especially the Challenge Course. The position also supports other Mission initiatives, including Service Tours.    

Responsibilities 

Core Responsibilities 

  • Collaborate across EdGE programs to plan, deliver, and lead developmentally appropriate activities for students, families, and community partners with the primary focus on students in K –8th grade; programming includes low and high challenge course activities and other experiential activities. 
  • Collaborate with other departments and programs, including Service Tours, to plan and deliver Challenge Course activities for non-EdGE participants. 
  • Support EdGE Primary programs and students in K-8 grades that participate in EdGE programming. 
  • Connect families to other Downeast Campus programs and resources when applicable 
  • Act as a positive role model and mentor; model appropriate behaviors. 
  • Other duties as assigned by supervisor. 

Challenge Course Responsibilities 

  • Ensure that all activities are carried out in a manner consistent with the highest safety standards as outlined in the Challenge Course Local Operating Procedures. 
  • Maintain a positive and safe environment for all Challenge Course participants and staff; use exceptional judgement.   
  • Operate the Challenge Course and perform technical rescues as needed based on safety guidelines outlined in the Mission’s Challenge Course Local Operating Procedures.  
  • Work as team with other EdGE Primary Outdoor Program staff and serve as Challenge Course Lead when scheduled by EdGE Primary Program Director. 
  • Facilitate, supervise and oversee use of the Challenge Course for all groups as scheduled, as part of the EdGE Primary team. 
  • Help maintain, track, and inventory outdoor equipment and keep in safe, working order as detailed in Challenge Course safety protocol based on industry standards. 
  • Ensure that the necessary forms related to challenge course use are filed and maintained appropriately. 

Programming Responsibilities

  • Maintain a positive and safe environment for youth, families, and staff; use exceptional judgement.  
  • Implement activities that support education program goals. 
  • Assist with program evaluation tools.  
  • Assist with implementation of activities and programming framework.  

Administrative Responsibilities 

  • Collect and record data on attendance and activities; assist with program evaluation tools.  
  • Aid in scheduling programs and challenge course use with partner schools and programs. 
  • Ensure challenge course forms are filed and maintained. 
  • Attend team meetings.

Qualifications 

Core Qualifications 

  • Knowledge of positive youth development, social-emotional learning, and/or mentoring-based methods and/or programs.  
  • Ropes or challenge course training or experience. 
  • Previous experience working with young people and/or experience teaching or facilitating.   
  • Excellent facilitation and communication skills.  
  • Strong leadership qualities such as delegating tasks, active listening, ability to give and receive feedback.  
  • Strong emotional regulation skills.  
  • Comfort working in a fast-paced environment.  
  • Ability to take the initiative and work independently, as well as cooperate with a team. 
  • Ability to motivate students and colleagues, work as part of a team, and relate to teens and younger children at various life stages, both in groups and individually.  
  • Commitment to maintaining a positive and safe environment for students, participants and fellow workers.  
  • Desire to make a positive impact on youth and families’ lives; be caring, compassionate, creative, and have a sense of humor. 
  • Ability to have a flexible schedule and be available to work outside regular working hours, including some evenings and weekends.  

Required Education and Experience 

  • High school degree with some college experience. 
  • Belaying experience and experience leading groups on ropes or challenge course. 
  • Experience operating a challenge course with technical skills to perform rescues on the course, or willingness to be trained to do so.  

Preferred Education and Experience 

  • Bachelor’s degree preferred, preferably related to education, recreation, tourism, or social sciences.  
  • Wilderness First Aid or Wilderness First Responder certification.   
  • Kayaking, hiking experience.  
  • Licensed Maine Guide.  
  • Lifeguard Certification helpful. 

Special Qualifications and Certifications 

  • Ropes or challenge course training or experience or willingness to be trained. 
  • Current CPR and First Aid certification or willingness to obtain. 

Position Conditions and Requirements 

Work Environment 

  • Some evenings and weekends, occasionally sleeping outdoors.  
  • Working outdoors in various weather conditions. 
  • Office environment for planning work. 

Physical Demands  

  • Physical ability and stamina for outdoor excursions and overnight camping trips  
  • Ability to move up to 50 pounds.   
  • Ability to be comfortable traversing a ropes course, performing rescues if needed on the course and being at heights.    
  • Ability to communicate verbally and visually to maintain safe conditions.  

Travel Requirements 

  • Drive a 15-passenger van with individuals in the vehicle.  
  • Clean driver’s license. 

Compensation  
This is a full-time exempt position based on a 40-hour work week.  The salary range is $43,680-$47,840 with excellent benefits. Salary commensurate with preparation.
