This description is representative of a Clinical Informatics Specialist– Intermediate level. The successful candidate will be hired at a Clinical Informatics Specialist level (Associate, Intermediate, or Senior) commensurate with education and experience.
The Clinical Informatics Specialist facilitates the integration of IS information and knowledge to support healthcare staff in decision making, design, education and implementation of the EMR and related processes at assigned EMHS Member Organizations. The primary role of the Informaticist is to serve as a "bridge" between EMHS physicians/clinicians, EMR Stewardship, Information Services (IS) and other key EMR stakeholders to educate, support, facilitate change and assure optimal use and evolution of EMHS healthcare information technology (HIT) assets. This individual is expected to exercise direction and judgment with minimal supervision while conducting training and assisting with parts of a project or process within the department. It is important this person can understand, technically, how systems interrelate with other departmental systems applications. This position works closely with Member Organization staff to meet their site-specific needs as well as with departmental manager, clinical application analysts and the CMIO/CNIO in providing the analysis of workflow process (current and future state) and gap identification required to support the application that will automate or improve upon the current system. The Specialist works with a team on phases of application implementation, systems analysis, and assists with preparing detailed specifications from which programs will be written. Routine maintenance of training accounts, user guides, training scripts, and periodic updates will also be expected (for those centrally located this will be a larger focus and expectation).
The specialists that are assigned remotely to a member organization will provide systematic rounding with end-users to reinforce the initial training, facilitate and disseminate information on updates or issues to the functionality or workflows and provide at the elbow support to end-users. The specialists will approach their support and education from a workflow / role perspective and understanding of the specific venue the staff work in. They will be required to round with end-users on the off shifts and weekends. While the majority of the initial training will be conducted by the central support staff via SMART Classroom trainings, the remote staff will be expected to provide training if the situation or schedules require it. Ensuring adequate coaches at the member organizations are trained and appropriate numbers in place to meet the needs will be essential.
S/he will assist physicians and clinical staff with a variety of EMR-related tasks including:
• Utilization of existing system functionality;
• Education and training on new systems/functionality;
• Processes and workflows;
• Submission of requests for EMR changes or new functionality
S/he will be required to:
• Demonstrates an understanding of EMHS Information Systems applications;
• Works in conjunction with clinical application analysts in reviewing process, assisting with design of future state, assisting with resolutions of identified gaps, and developing and designing curriculum and educational strategy for implementing clinical applications, including, but not limited to:
o Clinical Order Entry (Nursing andProviders)
o Clinical Documentation
o Batch Charge Entry
o PowerChart View (Providers, Support Staff and Medical Students
o Message Center
o Registration/Scheduling Applications
• Facilitates/teaches Millennium and Centricity applications classes for EMHS;
• Facilitating the work of Stewardship-appointed Task Teams and assuring that appropriate collaboration between IS and clinicians occurs at all levels;
• Keep stakeholders informed of the status of their questions/requests;
• Participates in workgroups defining the integration of the clinical applications into the clinical workflow;
• Participates in reviewing clinical processes to assist in design of new documentation and/or applications;
• Maintains technical skills and Incorporates professional nursing standards and accountability into informatics tools;
• Assists with the development of competency-based educational activities, using adult learning principles;
• Maintains database of completed competencies;
• Assists in the development of policies and procedures that are required to implement and maintain the clinical applications with the focus on patient safety;
• Participates in system testing and validation;
• Displays a willingness to make decisions or seek out direction from Senior Specialists, Manager, or Director;

•High school diploma or equivalent required; associate's degree preferred. Registered Nurse preferred. experience with Information Systems preferred.Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications required. Familiarity with process analysis and workflow concepts/documentation preferred. Background in clinical Information Systems and the electronic medical record preferred.
• Bachelor's degree required or associate's degree with 4 years of experience required or high school diploma/equivalent with 8 years of experience required. Registered Nurse preferred. National certification in informatics preferred. Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications required. Familiarity with process analysis and workflow concepts/documentation preferred. Background in clinical and/or healthcare Information Systems, electronic medical record preferred. Experience with teaching or educating adult learners preferred.
Bachelor's degree required or associate's degree with 5 years of experience required or high school diploma/equivalent with 10 years of experience required. Registered Nurse preferred. National certification in informatics preferred. Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications required. Familiarity with process analysis and workflow concepts/documentation preferred. Background in clinical and/or healthcare Information Systems, electronic medical record preferred. Experience with teaching or educating adult learners preferred.
