Title: School Nurse

Job Goals:

The school nurse is a registered professional nurse working in the school setting who strengthens and facilitates the educational process by improving and protecting the health status of children. The major focus of school nursing services is the prevention of illness and disability, and the early detection and correction of health problems. The school nurse is uniquely qualified in preventative health, health assessment and referral procedures.

Necessary Skills/Qualifications:

  1. RN (registered nurse), graduate of an accredited school of nursing and holds a current license form the Maine State Board of Nursing; BSN preferred
  2. Three years of nursing experience is preferred, with at least one year as a school nurse
  3. Eligible for state certification as a school nurse
  4. Evidence of ability to provide health related educational leadership and administer educational, preventative and remedial health care programs

Duties/Responsibilities:

  1. Provide health assessments
  2. Develop and implement health plans
  3. Maintain, evaluate and interpret cumulative health data to accommodate the individual needs of students
  4. Participate as the health specialist on the child educational evaluation team to evaluate the health individualized education plan (I.E.P.)
  5. Plan and implement school health management protocols for children with chronic health problems, including the administration of medication
  6. Participate in home visits to assess family’s needs as related to a student’s health; acts as liaison between school, home and community
  7. Develop procedures and provide crises intervention for acute illness, injury and emotional disturbances
  8. Promote and assist in the control of communicable diseases through preventative immunization programs, early detection, surveillance and reporting of contagious diseases
  9. Provide for a school environment conducive to learning
  10. Provide information on health
  11. Coordinate school and community health activities and serve as a liaison between school, home and community
  12. Act as a resource person in promoting health careers
  13. Engage in research and evaluation of school health services to act as a change agent for school health programs and school nursing practices
  14. Assist in the formation of health policies, goals and objectives for the school unit
  15. Is responsible for maintaining and updating cumulative health records
  16. Help develop/revise school health policies, procedures, standings orders and implements the school medication policy and procedures
  17. Prepare the budget for school health supplies
  18. Review, revise and implement emergency policies, including in-service health and safety programs for personnel
  19. Prepare first aid kits for each building
  20. Organize, instruct and supervise school health volunteers or assistants
  21. Report regularly to the principal and superintendent on school health activities as needed
  22. Prepare statistical reports for the Dept. of Education and the Dept. of Health & Human Services as required
  23. Interpret school health services for school personnel
  24. Interpret appraisal findings and helps students and parents accept responsibility for diagnosis and treatment
  25. Encourage parents to maintain current immunization protection as recommended by the Dept. of Health & Human Services
  26. Help school personnel recognize departures from appropriate behavior and growth patterns; help students and staff adjust student programs when necessary to accommodate health needs of students

Terms of Employment:

This is a school year position; salary is based on the appropriate RN step outlined in Article A – Salary Schedule of the Sanford Federation of Teachers contract.
