Position Summary:
The Saco School Department is seeking a highly skilled and motivated Special Education teacher and/or experienced Special Education Administrator to serve as a part-time (40%) IEP Meeting Facilitator/LEA Representative for Thornton Academy. This individual will act as the Local Education Agent (LEA) and facilitator of IEP meetings for students attending Thornton Academy and will work closely with the Thornton Academy special education team, families, and outside agencies to ensure legally compliant and high-quality documentation and timeliness.

Please note: This position is strictly responsible for the facilitation of IEP meetings and the LEA role. General case management and daily service provision for students are handled by Thornton Academy staff.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Serve as the Local Education Agent (LEA) and facilitator for all assigned IEP meetings at Thornton Academy.
  • Ensure accurate and timely completion of all special education documentation in accordance with legal timelines and district expectations.
  • Maintain compliant and up-to-date student records specific to IEP meeting facilitation and district LEA responsibilities.
  • Coordinate with Thornton Academy case managers and staff, as well as families and external agencies, to support IEP team processes.
  • Communicate effectively and professionally with all stakeholders before, during, and after IEP meetings.
  • Stay current with state and federal special education regulations and district procedures.
  • Represent the Saco School Department’s educational philosophy, values, and commitment to high-quality services.
  • Perform other LEA/facilitation-related duties as assigned by the Director of Instructional Support.

Required Skills & Qualities:

  • Ability to lead and facilitate IEP meetings with professionalism, clarity, and neutrality.
  • Strong organizational skills and meticulous attention to detail.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills for interactions with families, staff, and external partners.
  • Deep knowledge of special education laws (IDEA, MUSER) and compliance requirements.
  • Collaborative approach to working with both public and private school staff.
  • Commitment to equity, inclusion, and ensuring appropriate services for all students.

Qualifications:

  • Current Maine DOE Certification (282) or (035).
  • Demonstrated experience with IEP meeting facilitation, development, and compliance documentation.
  • Familiarity with the roles of LEA representatives and facilitation best practices.
  • Prior experience collaborating with interdisciplinary teams, including external/private school partners, preferred.

Additional Information:

  • This is a part-time position (40%); the schedule will be determined based on IEP meeting needs in collaboration with the Director of Instructional Support.
