Department: Medical Surgical Unit

Position is located: Mayo Hospital, Dover-Foxcroft, ME

Work Type: Full Time

Hours Per Week: 40 Hour/Week

Work Schedule: 7:00 AM to 3:30 PM

Summary:

Responsible for meeting State of Maine, Department of Human Services standards, as well as specialty specific and unit-based standards of care; for managing all personnel, supplies and equipment in the assigned department(s); and for promoting teamwork with physicians and personnel of other departments. Directs and ensures that all patients within the department(s) are assessed and their care is planned, implemented and evaluated. Has twenty-four (24) hour accountability for department(s). Plans, organizes, assigns duties, and supervises the performance of all personnel in the laboratory.

Responsibilities:

  • Reviews staffing patterns, census, and acuity of nursing units to see that staffing is consistent with patient needs and budgetary control; assists in adjusting staff to meet dynamic needs and makes rounds to observe daily staffing balance.
  • Interviews and hires staff in accordance with hospital policy and applicable laws utilizing the peer interviewing process.
  • Maintains clinical competency; acts as a resource to staff in clinical decision making, emergency situations and problem solving.
  • Demonstrates ability to effectively facilitate groups.
  • Reviews complaint, satisfaction, and quality information with staff on a regular basis in the lab.
  • Encourages staff to attend appropriate clinical education and cross-train to other modalities in the lab.
  • Submits rounding logs for staff and support service rounding at least quarterly in the lab.
  • Assures safety of all staff and patients through continuous monitoring for compliance with infection control and patient safety programs.
  • Collaborate with physicians and other healthcare professionals to promote quality patient care in the unit
  • Rotate through supervisor shifts when needs arise.
  • Demonstrates knowledge to identify and integrate information technology into patient care processes.
  • Effectively use occurrence system to monitor issues/trends in patient care.
  • Participates in and or leads a minimum of 3 hospital wide committees.
  • Effectively addresses patient complaints in a timely fashion
  • Assures provision of effective and timely communication of test results to the ordering practitioner and to the patient when appropriate in the lab.
  • Ensures that nursing services policies and procedures are current, followed, and reflect evidence-based practice (EBP).
  • Collects, monitors, and provides feedback on nursing sensitive quality indicators.
  • Following the recommendations of the National Patient Safety Goals, the following indicators are to be assessed, and a performance improvement plan developed if indicated to meet the highest standards of patient safety: o Ventilator Associated Events (VAE)
  • Assesses patient safety in the Laboratory Department by reviewing current guidelines and recommendations, and evaluating care provided.
  • Maintains up-to-date policies and procedures for each Laboratory modality. Manuals are continuously ready for regulatory surveys.
  • Assures timely provision of care with accurate, complete, and timely documentation of all tests provided.
  • Is familiar with QC required by regulatory agencies in each laboratory area and assures appropriate record keeping.
  • Provides oversight to assure clinical continuity and integration across the continuum.
  • Demonstrates ability to use financial information for strategic and operational decision making.
  • Assures departmental compliance with coding and billing rules and corrects issues causing denial of payment.
  • Participates in ongoing education.
  • Demonstrates ability to help move the organization towards shared vision and achieve organizational goals.
  • Assesses new services, procedures and/or equipment to maintain cost effective and state of the art services.
  • Strives to integrate counselors into the fabric of primary care for appropriate provision of care.

  • 3+ years of relative work experience required.

  • Word process application with the ability to create and edit documents, format, use tables, apply footnoting, create table of contents and mail merge techniques.
