Job Summary:
Nursing Supervisor
Join our team as a Nursing Supervisor, providing leadership and clinical oversight during the 3 PM – 11 PM shift (24–32 hours per week). In this role, you will mentor and support nursing staff, make sound clinical and operational decisions, and ensure safe, high-quality patient care across the unit.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Supports and promotes the mission and values of Covenant Health Ministry.
- Promotes a culture of safety, holding self and staff accountable for patient safety issues including, but not limited to; timely, complete, and accurate communication of patient information, informed consent, patient’s preference for life-sustaining treatment, DVT/VTE prevention, prevention of falls, pressure ulcers prevention, catheter-related infections, and hand hygiene.
- Establishes Incident Command Center and coordinates in-house disaster plans during off hours and holidays without administrative leadership. Executes Supervisor’s role and responsibilities as defined in the Emergency Operation Plan’s Roles and Responsibilities.
- Makes safe staffing decisions based on the Flexible Staffing Model, patient acuity, and staff skill and competency level.
- Supports unit leaders by providing input and suggestions to improve staffing.
- Assumes management and clinical responsibilities for delivering quality care throughout the nursing departments in the absence of Nurse Managers/Directors, recognizing when it is appropriate to notify Nursing Leadership, Senior Leadership, Administrator On-Call, and /or other resource personnel.
- Promotes and maintains positive intra- and inter-departmental working relationships to ensure open communication and collaborative problem-solving.
- Provides constructive feedback while mentoring staff in conflict resolution, problem-solving, and customer relations.
- Provides leadership coaching for employees to improve job performance, enhance job satisfaction, and promote professional growth.
- Contributes to meaningful staff Annual Appraisal through the provision of feedback to Manager/Director. If requested, may complete Annual Appraisal for Acute Care Float Pool Staff.
- Effectively resolves issues and conflicts that impact patient care, and customer satisfaction, or may have ethical/legal ramifications. Utilizes Chain of Command, as indicated.
- Participates and/or chairs inter/intradepartmental committees and task forces to assist in the achievement of department and/or system goals and objectives.
- Encourages and promotes attendance at internal and external educational programs.
- Attends and participates in Patient Care Services Leadership Meetings as ad hoc member.

- Assumes responsibility for supporting the staffing needs of all units: works with unit leaders to allocate the appropriate staffing based on the Flexible Staffing Model (FSM), patient acuity, and the skill and competency level of available staff.
- Assigns, defines, and delegates responsibilities and authority to staff within their capabilities and competency level.
- Continually explores ways to decrease costs while maintaining quality and ensuring appropriate coverage to meet operational needs.
- Supports the achievement of financial goals, by utilizing appropriate resources to meet patient care needs.
- Evaluates patient census and acuity by unit; supports and coaches unit leaders in staffing and patient flow decisions.
- Supports patient care by accessing information and supplies as needed.
- Participates in recruitment and selection of personnel, when requested.
- Assists with the timely admission of patients to appropriate nursing units.
- Assists with determining the best placement for outpatients needing services during off hours.
- Provided focused hand-off report to oncoming Supervisor or Nurse Leader.
- Maintains centralized responsibility for calling Operating Room staff and anesthesiologists for emergency procedures and surgeries, as requested, after hours.
- Instruct staff regarding resources to help formulate ethical decisions and access to resources, such as the Ethics Committee.
- Periodically engages in patient care activity at his/her discretion and as requested meeting defined standards of patient care.
- Assists in implementing, monitoring, and enforcing regulatory standards and/or applicable professional standards.
- Demonstrates and instructs staff in appropriate documentation practice that is accurate, timely, effective, and complete. Coaches “real-time” documentation as preferred.
- Documents all patient care assessments and interventions.
- Demonstrates and instructs staff in care delivery that preserves/protects patient’s autonomy, dignity, and rights.
- Role models care delivery that is non-judgmental, non-discriminatory, and sensitive to client diversity.
- Maintains all required competencies and completes annual compliance courses on time.
- Other duties as consistent with this role.
Job Requirements
Job Knowledge and Skills
- Basic Dysrhythmia preferred or obtained before completion of orientation.
- Crisis Prevention Institute (CPI) training preferred or obtained before completion of orientation.
- Strong interpersonal skills.
- Ability to make sound decisions while handling multiple, stressful priorities.
Education and Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in nursing required. Master’s degree preferred.
- Current Maine RN license required.
- Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certification required.
- Minimum of 5 years of Nursing Leadership experience required.
An equivalent combination of education and experience which provides proficiency in the areas of responsibility listed above may be substituted for the above education and experience requirements.
Working Conditions/Physical Demands
Must possess the physical and mental abilities to perform the tasks normally associated with this position that involve a combination of sitting, standing, walking, bending, stooping, twisting, and reaching. Lifting/carrying frequently up to 35 pounds, and occasionally up to 50 pounds. Some stress is related to a high level of responsibility for quality care. The ability to speak, read, write, and understand written instructions in English is required.

Comp Range:
$42.67 - $64.00Rate of pay displayed reflects the beginning of the pay scale. At the time of an offer, determination of your offer will reflect your skills and experience as it relates to the position.
