Maintenance Worker
RSU 24 is seeking an experienced and dedicated maintenance worker/groundskeeper to fill a full time position. The position will be based out of the Charles M. Sumner Learning Campus in Sullivan and will perform tasks at all RSU 24 locations. The successful candidate will possess the ability to work autonomously and without supervision at times during the work week. The ideal candidate will have the ability to complete the essential tasks of the position working under pressure to include time constraints and unforeseen changes (such as weather or athletic schedule modifications). Position Function
Keep buildings in clean and orderly condition. Perform heavy cleaning duties, such as cleaning floors, shampooing rugs, washing walls and glass, and removing rubbish. Duties may include monitoring furnace and boiler, performing minor routine maintenance activities, completing minor repairs, notifying management of problems and the need for repairs, and cleaning snow or debris from sidewalk. Landscape or maintain athletic fields using hand or power tools or equipment. Workers typically perform a variety of tasks, which may include any combination of the following: mowing, trimming, planting, watering, fertilizing, digging, raking, and lining the fields. Performs related duties and general custodial work as required.

Certificates & Licenses

Must possess a valid Maine Driver's License. Maine Department of Education Criminal History Records Check Certification.

Essential Functions
  • Clean building floors by sweeping, mopping, scrubbing, or vacuuming. Must be able to operate vacuum cleaners, carpet shampooers, brooms, mops, etc.
  • Service, clean, and supply restrooms.
  • Gather and empty trash.
  • Remove snow from sidewalks, driveways, or parking areas, using snowplows, snow blowers, snow shovels, spread snow melting chemicals.
  • Clean windows, glass partitions, and mirrors.
  • Eliminates insect, rodent and/or other pest infestations following district Integrated Pest Management procedures.
  • Set up and break down bleachers.
  • Mow and trim lawns and shrubbery, using mowers and power trimmers, and clear debris from grounds.
  • Requisition supplies or equipment needed for cleaning, maintenance, and grounds keeping duties
  • Weed flower beds, around trees, walkways, and shrubbery.
  • Move heavy furniture, equipment, or supplies, manually and by using hand trucks.
  • Maintain irrigation systems, including winterizing the systems and starting them up in spring.
  • Care for natural turf fields, making sure the underlying soil has the required composition to allow proper drainage and to support the grasses used on the fields.
  • Use irrigation methods to adjust the amount of water consumption and to prevent waste.
  • Care for established lawns by mulching, aerating, weeding, grubbing, removing thatch, or trimming
  • Line fields for athletic events in cooperation with the Athletic Directors.
  • Assist Maintenance Supervisor with water system monitoring and testing.
  • Make adjustments and minor building, carpentry, and plumbing.
  • Monitor building security and safety by performing such tasks as locking doors after operating hours and checking electrical appliance use to ensure that hazards are not created.
  • Monitor computerized building systems.
  • Understand and can troubleshoot custodial, maintenance, fields, and grounds keeping problems.
  • Notify managers concerning the need for major repairs or additions to building operating systems.
  • Operate small hand tools.
  • Operate vehicle.
  • Operate a tractor and other grounds keeping equipment.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Equipment
Uses hand tools of trade and related power equipment, including brooms, mops, floor cleaning and buffing machines, vacuum cleaners, snow blowers, shovels, power mower and other tools/equipment.
Safety Requirements
Follows all applicable safety rules, procedures and regulations governing the proper use of tools and power equipment used in the performance of duties.
Wears appropriate safety gear, including masks.
Must comply with school district's chemical hygiene program and follow MSDS sheets.
Travel Requirements
Travel between schools is required.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Ability to follow oral and written work orders from supervisor, and to coordinate work with principal and others.
  • Ability to read, write and speak English fluently.
  • Ability to describe orally or in writing cleaning, maintenance or repair problems as needed.
  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with students, staff and others contacted in the course of work.
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide all units of measure.
  • Ability to work in poor weather conditions, including heat, cold, rain, or snow.
  • Ability to work above ground from ladders and automatic lifts.
  • Ability to perform work according to standard procedures and schedule set forth by supervisor(s).
Physical and Mental Demands, Work Hazards
  • Works in standard office and school building environments.
  • Ability to work outdoors in inclement weather conditions.
  • Exposure to cleaning chemicals, solvents and contaminated trash, grasses, pollens, etc.

Qualifications Profile:

Education
Diploma Degree Relating to the Duties of Position(Technical School) or Associate's Degree (Two year college or technical school), certificate of completion of apprenticeship program or documentation of completion and/or license issued by a recognized agency in a building or mechanical trades profession preferred. Five years of progressive experience in a building or mechanical trades profession acceptable as substitute. Groundskeeping experience is desirable. High School Graduate or General Education Degree (GED) Minimum.
Computer Skills

Mid-level of computer and technical skills to include keyboarding, general data input, and the operation of monitoring systems for boilers, ventilation, electrical, and other computerized systems and equipment.

Other Requirements

Must have some experience in electrical and carpentry.
