Job Description
Become a part of the BIW legacy and help keep our shipbuilders safe.
The Firefighter/EMT position is committed to service for all Bath Iron Works employees, providing suppression of fires on board ships under construction, in production facilities and in office spaces.
As a dual-role department, we also provide Emergency Medical Services at the Bath, ME, facilities.
The firefighter/EMT will be expected to make routine inspections and fire-safety assessments on board ships under construction and inside all BIW manufacturing buildings and office areas.
The successful candidate should be willing to work in an energetic, industrial firefighting/EMS environment following the Incident Command Structure and the appropriate Standard Operational Guidelines.
Firefighters are organized in three platoons with 24 hours on and 48 hours off, 365 days a year.
Daily truck checks, station duties, training, Fire/EMS response and inspections are all part of the routine.
This position requires you to be able to obtain a government security clearance. You must be a US Citizen for consideration and you must be able to obtain an interim security clearance within the first 45 days of hire. Planned and unplanned overtime may be required as necessities arise.
Nearly new fire station includes sleeping quarters, gym, kitchen, offices and training room.
Modern ambulance with EMT-A supplies on board.
Rope rescue, confined space rescue and other training offered each year to keep skills sharp.
Personal vehicle parking available at the fire station.
Shift swapping permitted between firefighters within the week with Fire Chief approval.

$600 annual clothing allowance after 1 year of service.

Required/Preferred Education/Training
High School Diploma or GED required
Current and active member in a volunteer or career department required
A valid Maine EMS license is required.
Maine or Pro-Board Firefighter 1 and 2 certifications are required.
Knowledge of structural fire response operations, emergency medical care and firefighting equipment inspections is required.
Required/Preferred Experience
Previous interior firefighting and fire service experience is required.
Confined Space Rescue experience preferred.
Technical Rope Rescue experience preferred.
Unique/Additional Requirements
:
Must meet minimal medical requirements for Firefighter/EMT candidates as detailed in Chapter 6, Medical Evaluation of Candidates, National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 1582 Standard on Comprehensive Occupation Medical Program for Fire Departments.
Physical job requirements: (a) ability to ascend 5–7 continuous flights of stairs while carrying high-rise kits and other firefighting related equipment; (b) EMS patient removal from ships and other multi-level facilities; (c) carrying of medical trauma, airway and stair-chair carries.
