We are seeking a Systems Administrator. Under general direction, the systems administrator is responsible for the planning, operation and maintenance of hardware and software for servers, storage, and other system infrastructure for Maine Veterans’ Homes (MVH).
Job Related Responsibilities:
- Leads and participates in the planning, design, documentation, and implementation of servers, storage, networks, and other computer system infrastructure. Ensures appropriate availability, reliability, scalability, performance, and security.
- Manages and participates in the planning, implementation and support of the corporate email system. Ensures appropriate availability, reliability, scalability, performance, and security.
- Manages and participates in the planning, implementation and support of the corporate Active Directory system, to ensure appropriate system access and security.
- Working with the IS Director, establishes policies, procedures, and technologies to ensure security of computer systems, proper system administration, and appropriate end use.
- Oversees the day-to-day operation of the computer systems, taking responsibility for resolving performance issues, for monitoring system performance and for taking preventative action. Activities include installing physical servers and storage systems, creating virtual servers, performance monitoring and tuning, upgrades and patches to operating systems, and upgrades to systems administration tools.
- Manages various service requests (firmware upgrade, etc.) with vendors, as appropriate, and conduct follow-up. Coordinates with vendors to install, configure, and implement system upgrades as needed.
- Works with IS staff to deliver and maintain a high performing/high availability of computer systems. Participates with IS staff and others in projects that require expertise in system infrastructure and networking.
- Maintains current and adequate documentation of the system infrastructure, including diagrams, so that other IS staff and external reviewers have an overview.
- Working with the IS Director, recommends and makes purchases of system infrastructure hardware, software, and services. Assists with budgeting and managing expenses of related assets and services. Reviews invoices related to systems infrastructure and other areas of responsibility.
- Participates in the resolution of IS service calls to the help desk, documenting activity as appropriate within the "issue tracking" system for timely problem resolution. Participates in on-call support coverage as needed.
- Assists with development and maintenance of IS disaster recovery/business continuity plans.
- Assists with the proper tracking of IS-managed assets.
- Provide supervision and cross training relevant to server and storage management and support functions.
- Monitors market trends for new server and storage technology and recommends options based on analysis. Takes a lead role in technology strategy and capacity planning.
- Introduces and integrates new technologies into existing technical environment.
- Proposes changes that can increase efficiency (e.g., automation) of systems administration.
- Working with the IS Director, establishes policies, procedures, and technologies to ensure security of network systems, proper system administration, and appropriate end use.
- Recommends, performs, and coordinates upgrades and/or conversions to network software and hardware.

Experience and Skills
Essential Skills and Knowledge for the Job:
- Bachelor’s degree, with a technical major such as engineering or computer science.
- Five years of Windows systems administration experience with two years of experience managing a virtualized environment, preferably with VMware and MS Hyper-V.
- More than two years of network administration and management experience, including experience with Windows Server platforms within an Active Directory network.
- Two years of experience managing storage area networks (SANs).
- Strong understanding of local and wide-area networks.
- Ability to communicate orally and in writing about technical subjects in terms that are appropriate to the audience. Strong interpersonal and communications skills; capable of acting as a vendor liaison, communicating to groups, and working closely with staff and management at all levels in the organization.
- Ability to handle detailed, complex concepts and problems.
- Ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously and to work effectively in stressful situations.
- Up to date knowledge of LAN/WAN configurations to include experience with routers, VLANs, managed switches, firewalls, and wireless technology.
- Ability to prioritize requests and workload, to organize and schedule a wide variety of activities and to communicate with management and colleagues as appropriate.
- Maintain cooperative relationships with all those contacted during the course of work.
- Possession of a valid driver’s license to drive among MVH’s facilities as needed.
