General Summary:
This position has overall responsibility for Life Benefits, Financial Services and Benefit Research Information and is responsible for their strategic and operational leadership. The incumbent is charged with ensuring thorough, fair, and objective claim evaluations, providing the highest level of service to our customers, and defending the company against fraudulent or illegitimate claims. This position in partnership with the SVP, has responsibility for the overall effectiveness, efficiency, and productivity of these organizations, including ensuring the delivery of high-quality claims adjudication support through implementation of consistent policies & practices. This position has responsibility for providing the highest level of financial expertise and financial risk management on claim issues, financial recoveries of overpayments and determining benefit taxability accuracy. The position also has responsibility to provide efficient, accurate and comprehensive research information to the Benefit Center and other Unum Enterprise partners in order to strengthen the claim management process.Principal Duties and Responsibilities
- Provide senior Benefits leadership resulting in claim management excellence, high quality customer service, and strong operational effectiveness and efficiency, contributing to the overall profitability of Unum US.
- Responsible for the collective financial performance and strategic development of the organization.
- Ownership and development of plans for the offset management program and oversight of the relationship with two key external Social Security Advocacy partners.
- Develop and deliver service strategy and service environment that result in high quality experiences for Unum customers.
- Develop claim and financial strategies, policies and practices that drive claim management effectiveness.
- Assure thorough, fair and objective research and identification against fraudulent or illegitimate claims through the use of various vendors.
- Assure the organization is compliant with its regulatory and legal commitments (e.g., state insurance dept standards, standards for auditing and financial controls).
- Contribute to the overall effectiveness of the Benefits Center through active participation in planning initiatives, strategy development, etc. as appropriate.
- Maintain effective relationships and open communication across the organization with key strategic partners (e.g., finance, products, sales, u/w, etc.)
- Drive cultural, organizational and process change to achieve continuous improvement and operating effectiveness objectives.
- Foster a high-performance environment and engaged work force.
- Ensure the ongoing development of direct reports and ensure that there is appropriate bench strength in place for the organization.
- Assure alignment and integration of the benefits organization with Unum strategy and goals. Contribute to the overall effectiveness of Unum through active participation in Benefits strategy development, planning and prioritization of initiatives.
- Assure appropriate communication as needed with business stakeholders such as regulators, intermediaries, and customers.
- Provide the field sales and service function support for new sales and renewals, including customer presentations, finalist visits, development of marketing materials and responding to large case RFPs as needed.

Job Specifications
- An undergraduate degree in relevant academic discipline (or equivalent) required; MBA preferred
- 12+ years of experience in the benefits industry.
- Strong knowledge of insurance products and claim operations.
- Comfortable interacting with the most senior management of the corporation as well as customers, brokers, and producers.
- Ability to articulate a strategic direction and foster employee commitment and engagement.
- Possess excellent operational skills; incumbent understands the strategic application of technology and process reengineering concepts to enhance operating effectiveness in a high-volume production area.
- Strong business results and profit orientation.
- Ability to work collaboratively as a member of the Benefits senior leadership team, while providing leadership to team members on specific initiatives or projects.
- Track record for attracting, retaining, and developing talent, including leadership talent.
- Proven ability to build a team and implement a long-term vision.
- Proven leadership experience in running medium sized operating unit with track record of achieving aggressive business plans.
- Strong analytical skills with attention to detail
- Ability to implement large scale change with minimal disruption to business operations.
- Excellent communication skills both oral and written.

The base salary range for applicants for this position is listed below. Unless actual salary is indicated above in the job description, actual pay will be based on skill, geographical location and experience.
$144,900.00-$273,800.00Additionally, Unum offers a portfolio of benefits and rewards that are competitive and comprehensive including healthcare benefits (health, vision, dental), insurance benefits (short & long-term disability), performance-based incentive plans, paid time off, and a 401(k) retirement plan with an employer match up to 5% and an additional 4.5% contribution whether you contribute to the plan or not. All benefits are subject to the terms and conditions of individual Plans.
