Job Summary:
Colby is a member of the New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) and has 28 intercollegiate sports that compete at the Division III level, and 4 programs (men’s and women’s Alpine and Nordic Skiing) that compete at the Division I level. The department also hosts a variety of club and intramural sports. Over one-third of Colby’s 2,200 students participate in intercollegiate sports, and in total, nearly three-quarters are involved in fitness and recreation activities in the department.
The College just completed the construction of a new, state-of-the-art athletics complex, which opened this year and is destined to be among the best Division III facilities in the country. The 350,000 square-foot athletics center includes an indoor track and field competition center, aquatic center with Maine’s first 50-meter pool, squash center, gymnasium, hockey arena, strength and fitness center, training rooms, and coaching suites. Additionally, the College recently opened a 70-acre-plus outdoor competition center that consists of three gleaming new competition and recreational fields that are also among the finest outdoor venues in Division III.
The Colby College Department of Athletics seeks an assistant men’s and women’s cross country coach beginning August 11, 2025 and ending June 30, 2026. The assistant men’s and women’s cross country coach’s responsibilities include assisting the head coach in all duties involved in running a competitive Division III cross country program. Position Qualifications
- On-site coaching in races and practices, including organization and implementation of daily practices
- Prepare film breakdown and analysis, and present analysis to team members
- Plan and prepare for races
- Provide support and encouragement to student athletes, including academic counseling and advising.
- Monitor academic progress of athletes
- Recruit and retain talented athletes successfully
- Research academic and athletic credentials
- Build relationships with prospective student athletes and their families through email, phone calls, and one-on-one meetings
- Organize and implement recruit visits
- Understand NCAA rules, compliance, and laws
- Ensure safety and well-being of student athletes
- Serve as an effective role model for college-age students
- Assist with day to day operations of the program
- Provide effective communication to the head coach
- Collaborate effectively with other Department of Athletics’ team members
- Assist with the coordination of team travel
Minimum Qualifications:
- Valid driver’s license required and must meet the College’s Fleet Safety Policy requirements
- Ability to travel for team practices, competition, and scouting in and out of state
Education and/or experience:
- Bachelor’ degree or equivalent in education and experience
- Previous experience coaching and/or competing at the collegiate level is highly desirable

- Specific vision abilities required by this position include close vision, distance vision, and ability to adjust focus.
- The overall work environment requires the mental ability to shift focus quickly due to interruptions; an employee must be able to mentally track multiple projects and tasks as well.
- The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate; however, there may be unexpected instances of somewhat loud sounds.
- Operates on courts, gymnasium, and training rooms. General campus environment. Several weeks of domestic travel and frequent evening and weekend work required throughout the year.
