Job Summary

Under the general supervision of the Circulation and User Services Manager, the User Services Supervisor participates in all activities at the Circulation, Reserves, and Media Commons public service desks; also oversees operations at the library’s three auxiliary locations.

This position is responsible for managing all circulation desk activities during scheduled evening and weekend hours, supervising the Evening Circulation Assistant, and training and supervising casual employees and student assistants. Additional duties include coordinating the physical maintenance of library collections, preparing course reserve materials, supporting various departmental functions, and assisting library users with basic reference, information, and technology-related inquiries.

Essential Functions:

  • Oversee all library operations during evening and weekend hours, including supervision of campus library branches.
  • Supervise student employees working at three active service desks in the main library.
  • Coordinate with the Course Materials and Library Collections Specialist to process and place course materials on reserve.
  • Lead planning and implementation of periodic stacks maintenance and collection organization projects.

Participate in resource sharing activities, MaineCat and Bowdoin Library Take-Out



The hourly range for this position is expected to be: $26.35 –$28.00/per hour (This position is eligible for overtime and shift/weekend differential). Compensation based on your skills and experience.

Education/Skills Requirements

Associate’s degree or equivalent work experience required. Bachelor’s degree preferred.

  • Outstanding interpersonal, and written and oral communication skills.
  • Strong customer service orientation and ability to work with a diverse group of constituents.
  • Excellent organizational and problem-solving skills.



Experience Requirements and/or Equivalents

A minimum of 1-3 years of library or customer service, and proven experience in a supervisory or leadership role required.

  • Must be able to work independently and in a team environment.
  • Proven technology skills and use of a broad range of software applications (Microsoft, Google, database systems).
  • Ability to lead, mentor, and motivate team members to achieve their goals and perform to the best of their abilities.
  • Monitor daily workflows, assign tasks and ensure all team members adhere to college policies.


Preferred:

  • Experience working at a library circulation desk and with an automated circulation system.
  • Experience supervising and training student employees.
  • Experience with stacks maintenance and access.

Standard Work Days and Hours

This position is scheduled for 35 hours/week (0.88 FTE) and is a year round position.

During academic year: Sunday – Thursday 4:00pm – 12:00am.
Daytime hours, Monday-Friday 9:00am – 5:00pm, are required when class is not in session. This position is considered to be essential personnel.

This is an on-site role, and candidates must be able to work in person on Bowdoin College Campus in Brunswick, Maine.
