Job Summary:

The Center for Small Town Jewish Life relies on the generosity of major donors and Jewish foundations for the bulk of its annual operating expenses. The Center also plans to launch an endowment campaign in the near future whose success will depend on effective solicitation of major donor prospects. The Director of Development will play a leading role in forging and stewarding relationships with current and prospective supporters, working in partnership with the Center’s Executive Director and Deputy Director. The Director of Development will also be the primary staff person responsible for managing the Center’s external advisory board, including recruiting and onboarding major donors or major donor prospects as new advisory board members.

Essential Functions and Key Responsibilities

  • Cultivate and steward relationships with major donors and major donor prospects
  • Solicit donations from major donors and major donor prospects
  • Work with the Executive Director to identify major donor prospects as well as Jewish foundations that merit cultivation
  • Cultivate and steward relationships with Jewish foundations and similar philanthropic organizations
  • Draft grant proposals and grant reports, in collaboration with staff members responsible for current and prospective grant-funded programs
  • Steward relations with members of the Center’s national advisory board
  • Staff the advisory board’s governance committee, whose responsibilities include recruiting and onboarding new board members
  • Plan and run advisory board meetings, in partnership with the Center’s Executive Director and Deputy Director
  • Contribute to the Center’s educational programs by, for example, offering a training session on fundraising and donor relations to lay leaders participating in the Center’s leadership development programs
  • Participate actively in Center staff meetings and in Center programs run by other staff members
  • Serve as a public representative of the Center
  • Engage in ongoing professional development

Position Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

Education and/or experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree or the equivalent in education and experience
  • At least 5 years experience in Jewish foundations and/or Jewish communal donor relations

  • Superb verbal and written communication skills
  • Able to prioritize among tasks and meet multiple simultaneous deadlines with an attention to detail, both independently and as a member of a team

  • The ability to comply with highly inflexible deadlines is required to successfully perform the essential functions of this position; there will be multiple occurrences of sudden, urgent task completion required.
  • There may be occurrences of employees, past employees, members of the general public, and others who express opinions, may exhibit strong emotions, which will require the employee to interact professionally, diplomatically, and appropriately in such situations.
  • While performing the essential duties of this position, an employee would frequently be required to move around the office space as well as within hallways, meeting rooms, and other parts of the campus facilities.
  • There may be multiple/daily instances of prolonged personal computer use which would include keyboard and/or mouse usage as well as viewing a computer monitor.
  • An employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 35 pounds to perform essential position functions.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this position include close vision, distance vision, and ability to adjust focus.
  • The overall work environment requires the mental ability to shift focus quickly due to interruptions; an employee must be able to mentally track multiple projects and tasks as well.
  • The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate; however, there may be unexpected instances of somewhat loud sounds.
