Full job description
South Portland High School is seeking a dedicated and compassionate Special Education Teacher to join our dynamic and collaborative special education team, serving students with Intellectual Disabilities. This teacher will support our students in the functional life skills program, as well as our students receiving resource supports.
This teacher will design and deliver individualized instruction that emphasizes academics, communication, social-emotional development, executive functioning, self-help skills, and vocational readiness. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in teaching foundational & functional reading, writing, and math. Candidates should have a strong understanding of behavioral principles for supporting students with intellectual disabilities and limited verbal communication. Experience with augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) systems is preferred to support students with complex communication needs. Promoting and supporting a positive team atmosphere, clear communication, and enthusiasm to teach our diverse students required!
Key Responsibilities:
Develop and implement individualized education programs (IEPs) aligned with student needs, goals, and communication levels.
Provide structured, whole group, small group, and/or instruction using task analysis and other ABA-based instructional methods.
Adapt and modify curriculum to support academics and life skills in alignment with each student's developmental level.
Promote student independence in areas such as self-care, daily living routines, social communication, and community participation.
Collect and analyze data regularly to monitor student progress, adjust instruction, and report outcomes.
Collaborate with related service providers, (e.g., speech, OT, PT, behavior specialists), special education teachers, educational technicians, and families to ensure cohesive, team-based support for each student.
Supervise and provide guidance to classroom support staff to ensure consistent implementation of instructional strategies and behavior plans.
Create a structured, supportive classroom environment that prioritizes safety, consistency, and student dignity.
State of Maine Teacher of Disabilities 282 (7-12) certification required.
