Job Summary and Scope
Under the direction of the Chief Nursing Officer, the Nursing Supervisor is responsible for the supervision of the hospital. They assume responsibility for the coordination of age appropriate patient care activities in the absence of the CNO, utilizing knowledge of standards, policies and procedures outlined for the facility. They coordinate nursing care activities within the nursing services in the absence of the Unit Directors and provide overall management of the facility. They maintain a high degree of confidentiality and support the mission, vision and values of the organization.
Essential Job Functions
· Promotes good communication, teamwork, professional relationships, and positive attitudes among physicians, staff, and personnel in all departments.
· Assesses the quality and appropriateness of patient care on every unit based on adequacy of staffing as related to patient acuity and nursing staff level of competency and age specific care requirements.
· Coordinates all aspects of nursing care to achieve desired patient outcomes.
· Addresses immediate staffing problems in collaboration with charge nurses by assessing patient care needs and reassigning staff as needed.
· Manages problem areas in patient care delivery.
· Identifies problem areas, encourages staff input and makes recommendations for resolution and reports issues to the Unit Director and/or Chief Nursing Officer as appropriate.
· Works in collaboration with the Unit Director/Chief Nursing Officer in developing best practices focusing on patient satisfaction goals.
· Maintains competency in professional practice by completion of 100% of annual competency program and departmental educational bucket lists.
· Demonstrates decision-making skills by establishing priorities and initiating action.
· Exercises cost containment practices and educates the staff in such practices.
· Attends department staff meetings and management meetings as scheduled.
· Seeks out needed information by staying informed and involved by attending meetings, reading memos, policies, meeting minutes, newsletters, e-mail and other appropriate information in a timely manner.
· Demonstrates a clear understanding of, and commitment to, the hospital’s mission, vision and values as well as the service excellence standards while completing all tasks and responsibilities.
· Complies with the Code of Conduct and all appropriate policies and procedures.
· Reliable attendance and punctuality, including observing appropriate break times and extending a scheduled shift when necessary to meet patient demands.
· Acknowledges input/feedback on performance from peers, staff, ED Director, Surgical Services Director, MedSurgPeds/OBS Director, and Chief Nursing Officer.
· Seeks out needed information by staying informed and involved by attending meetings, reading memos, policies, meeting minutes, newsletters, e-mail and other appropriate information in a timely manner.
· Maintains appropriate communication networks.
· Sets goals for performance annually.
Other duties as assigned by the Unit Director and/or Chief Nursing Officer that is relevant to the position.

Requirements
· Graduate of an accredited school of nursing, BSN Preferred
· Current licensure as a registered nurse in the State of Maine or Authorization to Practice pending licensure by endorsement
· BCLS
· ACLS
· PALS
· NRP within 6 months of hire
· Minimum 4 years acute care experience
· Demonstrates clinical proficiency in the age appropriate care of patients using the nursing process
· Demonstrates leadership skills with strengths in communications, organization, management of conflict and problem solving
· Ability to function independently
· Ability to act rapidly and efficiently in emergency situations
