Schedule: Pool/Per Diem
Under the supervision of the Respiratory Therapy Supervisor, the Respiratory Therapist Intern monitors, evaluates and treats pediatric through geriatric cardiopulmonary patients with respiratory and/or cardiac impairment in accordance with physician directives, departmental protocols and in conjunction with nursing staff. The Respiratory Therapist Intern performs selected activities as assigned by and under the supervision of a Respiratory Therapist. The incumbent performs duties and tasks in accordance with performance standards established for the job and within the scope of practice according to their licensure. The scope of practice is also dictated by competencies developed and validated by the department and supported by the accredited respiratory program that the intern is enrolled in. The incumbent may have access to highly confidential patient, employee and/or Mercy proprietary information, and must handle & protect the information in accordance with hospital & system policies, HIPAA requirements and the highest level of ethical standards. The incumbent is responsible for reporting all security events, potential events, or other security risks to the organization. The incumbent is responsible for participation in and completion of all patient safety initiatives appropriate to the position, and conducts all job responsibilities according to the Mission and Values of Mercy Hospital.
State of Maine Licensure as a Respiratory Student or Temporary Respiratory Technician required. Healthcare Provider/Professional Rescuer certification is required. Must be at a minimum a second year student in a COARC accredited Respiratory Care program. Must be computer literate. Must have excellent interpersonal skills, as the incumbent deals with acutely ill patients, their families, physicians, and all levels of employees in stressful situations. Must explain highly technical information in an easily understandable manner. With general guidance from the Supervisor of Respiratory Therapy, the incumbent must be able to act independently within their defined scope of practice and use initiative and judgment while handling multiple priorities and treating patients in varied levels of care and at varied age levels. Must have the judgment and flexibility to deal professionally with differing physician treatment methods. Must have a high degree of analytical and problem solving skills to gather and assess patient data appropriate to condition and age and treat according to physician orders and department protocols. Must have a high degree of accountability as the incumbent's work and judgment directly and immediately affect patient care.
