IT NETWORK TECHNICIAN
Information Technology Department

The City of Portland is seeking a skilled and motivated IT Network Technician to support and maintain a wide range of infrastructure assets across the City's Information Systems network. Approximately 75% of the work involves direct hands-on installation, configuration, monitoring, and maintenance of networking hardware and applications. The remaining 25% focuses on documentation, data management, and service desk ticketing.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Install, configure, and maintain physical network hardware and related components following best practices and City policies
  • Manage and administer the City’s IP address schema
  • Configure VoIP components and protocols (DHCP, LLDP, etc.)
  • Monitor key network performance indicators and respond to alerts and anomalies
  • Troubleshoot issues related to both wired and wireless technologies
  • Escalate critical or unresolved issues to management
  • Participate in remediation of network vulnerabilities and other cybersecurity efforts
  • Maintain accurate documentation of systems, procedures, and service activities

Required Experience & Education: (Combined 6 years of any of the following):

  • Minimum 3 years in a Tier-2 (or higher) IT support, field service, or service desk technician role
  • Minimum 3 years in a network operations center (NOC) or systems administrator position
  • 2+ years of post-secondary education in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field

Preferred Qualifications:

  • CompTIA Network+ certification or equivalent
  • Proficiency in network switches, routers, wireless controllers, and firewalls
  • Strong understanding of TCP/IP networking and related protocols
  • Experience with VoIP system management
  • Familiarity with network diagramming tools (e.g., Visio, Lucidchart)
  • Use of ITSM platforms (e.g., ServiceNow, Spiceworks)
  • Working knowledge of formal change management procedures
  • Knowledge of municipal network environments and regulatory frameworks (NIST, HIPAA, CJIS, PCI)
  • Proficiency in Google Workspace and/or Microsoft Office Suite
  • Strong documentation habits and attention to detail
  • Excellent interpersonal and customer service skills, with the ability to explain technical issues to non-technical staff.

Necessary Special Requirements:

  • Must possess a valid State Class C driver’s license and have and maintain a good driving record.
  • This position requires onsite presence; remote work is only allowed occasionally for off-hours support.

Salary & Benefits:
This is a Pro-Tech Union position – Grade 8 - Starting pay range: $61,990.76 - $76,225.76/year, based on relevant years of experience.
