Position is 12 hours per week.

Job Summary:

Under close supervision of the Emergency Medicine physician and registered nurses, the Advanced Emergency Department Technician will assist in providing quality care directly and indirectly to patients presenting to Cary Medical Center emergency department. This position will adhere to the mission and vision statements of CMC in order to meet the healthcare needs of patients and families presenting to the hospital and emergency department.

Essential Job Duties:

1. Collects and conveys information to nursing and physicians/mid-level providers regarding the health status of patients in the Emergency Department.

2. Keeps patients informed of their treatment plans and assists RNs and physicians/mid-level providers in delivering care.

3. Documents patient care per department policy.

4. Assists Emergency Department staff in maintaining patient flow in the Emergency Department.

5. Initiates IV access and performs blood draws in accordance with hospital policy. Initiates IV fluid to maintain IV patency or, per order of physician/mid-level provider. Discontinues IVs as ordered by physician/mid-level provider.

6. Performs vital signs, telemetry and 12-lead EKG monitoring.

7. Initiates life-saving measures per ACLS/PALS/PHTLS protocols.

8. Assists with patient transports to inpatient units.

9. Assists with removal of patients from vehicles.

10. Assists discharged patients to vehicles.

11. Answers Emergency Department phone per department policy.

12. Assists RNs/physicians/mid-level providers with splint application.

13. Assists physicians/mid-level providers with suturing.

14. Assists patients to bathrooms/commodes. Assists patients with bed pans. Assists RNs/CNAs with cleaning patients.

15. Assists ER staff with maintaining the safety and 1:1 observation of suicidal patient (this may require direct 1:1 supervision of the patient when the assigned sitter is on break).

16. Attends meetings and in-services as required by Emergency Department policy.

17. Reports defective and broken equipment to Primary Charge Nurse.

18. Stocks and cleans rooms, when needed.

19. Responsible for performing tasks that are within the scope of his/her educational preparation, knowledge, and permitted by the policies and procedures of Cary Medical Center and other local, state, and federal guidelines; and the policies of the facility requesting the services.

20. Complies with local, state and federal laws and regulations.

Requirements

Organizational requirements:

1. Reports to work on time and as scheduled.

2. Wears identification while on duty.

3. Uses computerized punch time system correctly.

4. Adheres to dress code, appearance is neat and tidy. Finger nails must be free from nail polish. Jewelry cannot be worn.

5. Maintains and ensures patient confidentiality at all times.

6. Complies with organizational policies regarding ethical business practices.

7. Maintains regulatory requirements (i.e. licensing, certifications).

8. Attends a minimum of 6 staff meetings annually, reviews monthly staff meetings annually, reviews monthly staff meeting minutes of missed meetings.

9. Parks in designated employee area, allows accessible parking for the elderly, ill, and visitors.

10. Not to exceed 3% of unscheduled absences.

License/Educational/Experience/Skill Requirements:

1. High School graduate or equivalent

2. Maintenance of current Maine EMT-P license; CCEMT-P preferred

3. At least 2 years’ of experience; currently practicing preferred

4. Maintenance of current ACLS, PALS & PHTLS certification

5. Educated on and compliant with HIPAA regulations; maintains strict confidentiality of client information.

6. Complies with Infection Control, Standard Precautions and OSHA standards for the healthcare professional.

7. Able to wear personal protective equipment (e.g., face mask, goggles, and latex/non-latex gloves) as needed.

8. Able to read, write and effectively communicate in English.

9. Able to understand medical/surgical terminology.

10. Proficient with sterile and aseptic techniques.

Occupational Exposure:

1. Requires high exposure to bio-hazardous wastes that mandate the wearing of gloves, masks, gowns, and goggles for actual or potential exposure.

2. Requires heavy exposure to malodorous and infectious body fluids, and some minimal exposure to smells from cleansing agents.

Cognitive Environment Requirements:

1. Some problem solving required, as well as making independent judgments and decisions.

2. Continuously assess situations and determine corrective actions as needed.

3. Communicates information in a friendly and effective manner.

Availability Requirements:

1. Depending on the department staffing needs, you may be asked to work nights, weekends, and holidays.

Physical Requirements:

1. Exerting /lifting: up to 50lbs. (workloads over 50lbs. require assistance)

2. Use material handling equipment (i.e. carts, dollies) and proper body mechanics when transferring supplies, or that which exceeds your capacity to lift.

3. Pulling/Pushing: Must be able to pull/push weight greater than 3 feet manually or with assistive devices.

4. Standing: 4-7 hours/day.

5. Walking: 4-7 hours/day.

6. Twisting: Moderate

7. Bending: Moderate

8. Near Vision: Requirements 20/40 near vision.

9. Far vision: Requires 20/40 far vision.

10. Visual color discrimination is required.

11. Visual Perception: Moderate depth perception

12. Hearing: Requires whisper hearing at 8 feet.

13. Speech: Moderate, clear speaking ability.

14. Manual Dexterity: Frequent fine motor skills required.
