Summary:

Security Officers report to and receive direction and guidance from the Manager of Security and others appointed over them. Officers are responsible for protecting and serving Northern Light Health patients, staff, and visitors, in addition to monitoring and protecting facilities and assets, across the system. They monitor and operate access control systems, security camera systems, intercoms, two-way radios, telephones, and alarm systems. Security Officers perform the following duties daily: patrol facilities and grounds, provide emergency assistance and response, conduct patient observations, interact with patients, families, visitors, law enforcement and correctional officers, and support Northern Light Health staff with issues involving security and safety concerns. The individual must complete detailed notes based on observations, conduct security investigations and interviews, and write detailed reports regarding incidents and events.

Responsibilities:

  • Follow the orders and direction, both verbal and written, as communicated to them by the Manager of Security and others as directed.
  • Proactively identify and resolve issues which may negatively impact site security and facility occupant safety.
  • Observe, report, and assist with the resolution of security events.
  • Respond to acute behavioral events and assist with de-escalation and problem solving to support the person or the clinical team.
  • Escort emergency first responders to the location of emergencies, such as a fire.
  • Provides security escorts for individuals when requested.
  • Assist facility users with wayfinding and escorts.
  • Observe and report safety hazards and assist with proper resolution.
  • Maintain accurate daily documented activities, dispatch entries, and incident reports.
  • Staff posts and complete assignments as required.
  • Operate security systems including video monitoring, access control, alarm systems, radio systems, and more.
  • Follow and provide appropriate response during the activation of emergency operation plans.
  • Be prepared to work additional hours as assigned to meet shift staffing standards or for emergent staffing needs.
  • Protect persons and facilities during floods, fires, structural damages, utility outages, special events of during various security incidents.
  • Serve as a first responder to intrusion, distress, and other alarm systems according to policies and procedures.
  • Provide emergency access and escorts to restricted or sensitive areas.
  • Complete security surveys and risk assessments as trained and assigned.
  • Control facility keys and lock and unlock doors according to locking schedule(s).
  • Perform the collection, transport, tracking, and release of patient valuables, including lost and found.
  • Participate in the transport and release of deceased patients to and from the morgue. Officers are responsible for completing the required paperwork upon transporting to or releasing from the morgue.
  • Support screening of individuals for weapons, which may include the operation of a walk-through metal detector or handheld scanner or other technology.
  • Remain current and follow organizational and department policies and procedures.
  • Complete other duties and training as assigned.

Other Information:

  • Current license to drive in the state of Maine, with reliable transportation and agency required auto liability insurance.
  • Experience in healthcare security, corporate security, law enforcement, or military preferred.
  • Knowledge and experience with Omnigo, Avigilon video surveillance & access control, C-Cure access control.
  • Ability to maintain a high level of professionalism.
  • Must refrain from using personal electronic equipment while on-duty to promote safe, productive, and distraction free work environments.
  • Must possess a strong desire and ability to provide a high level of customer service through engagement with others.
  • Ability to don and wear personal protective equipment, such as gloves, face shields, goggles, gowns, masks, powered air-purifying respirator, and issued ballistic vest protection while on duty.

  • Ability to quickly respond to emergent situations.
  • Skilled in verbal communications, especially listening and recalling information during high stress conditions.
  • Knowledge of verbal and non-verbal tactics to safely de-escalate individuals.
  • Skilled in written communications including the ability to type accurate and detailed reports efficiently, recalling actions taken during emergencies and critical incidents.
  • Knowledge of crime prevention strategies.
  • Ability to detect, locate, and report smoke, unusual odors, and running water which may indicate safety problems.
  • Knowledge of and skill with computer systems, including spreadsheets, word processing, e-mail, computer-aided dispatch, alarm systems, access control software, and surveillance cameras.
  • Ability to use de-escalation strategies, trained control techniques, and the application of restraints as trained.
  • Knowledge of security practices used in safeguarding persons and property.
  • Completion of Management of Aggressive Behavior (MOAB) certification requirements within 3 months of hire.
  • Completion of Northern Light Health Security orientation and field training program within 1 month of hire.
  • Completion of an approved CPR certification course within 3 months of hire.
  • Completion of IAHSS Basic Certification within 9 months of hire.
