  • Position Summary
    • The Director of Pastoral Services is responsible for developing, organizing, and directing programs and activities pertaining to the provision of pastoral and spiritual care at Southern Maine Health Care. The goals and objectives of the Pastoral and Spiritual Care Program which the Director shall further (and ongoing) develop in consultation with senior administrative staff and clergy, shall be consistent with the mission, vision and values of MaineHealth and Southern Maine Health Care. The Director shall coordinate the provision of pastoral care with visiting clergy, chaplains, nursing, and members of the medical staff. The program shall be designed to support the spiritual needs of our patients, their families, and our staff. Program design will be such that the needs of persons from faith backgrounds that include major world religions, as well as persons without specific faith traditions, and agnostic persons, shall find value and support. This will include, but not be limited to, the advancement of a program of special spiritual events recognizing certain religious holy days and commemorations.
  • Required Minimum Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs)
    • Education: Bachelor's degree is a minimum requirement. Master’s degree is preferred.
    • License: Board Certification in Clinical Pastoral Education is strongly preferred; eligibility is required.
    • Experience: Three to five year of experience in a health care environment responsibilities is required. Background in medical ethics is strongly preferred.
    • The successful applicant must be able to describe a program of spiritual self-care practiced, which may be agnostic to major world religions, but must be indicative of discretion, prayerfulness, and self-awareness.
    • Must demonstrate successful examples of supporting patients, families, and staff in spiritual need in a health care setting.
    • Must demonstrate exceptional communication skills and diplomacy.
    • A network in SMHC’s key service areas is strongly preferred.
    • Must demonstrate ability to effectively seek sponsorships and other support, manage multiple tasks and solve problems independently and demonstrate ability to plan.
    • Competency with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint) programs is a must, and experience with databases is preferred.
    • The successful applicant will be able to demonstrate program start-up experience, and the ability to describe and implement evidence based protocols, pathways, and policies, and to create operational controls to monitor effectiveness.
    • Strong organizational skills, excellent written, verbal, and public speaking skills, and the willingness to take initiative are critical. Strong business writing skills are required.
    • Solid interpersonal skills, relationship building, and the ability to deal effectively with a diversity of people are essential. This positon requires strong customer service skills, emotional intelligence, and an appreciation for the myriad internal and external customers of SMHC.
    • The successful applicant will have managed team based work, and demonstrate an ability to build a cohesive, competent, and responsive team that can achieve benchmarked performance goals and key performance indicators. An applicant that has built programs which provide spiritual support to clinical teams as well as patients will be strongly preferred.
    • Must be able to understand, interpret, comply with, and train to Joint Commission requirements for Spiritual Care in a health care organization.
    • Must be able to develop and implement programming that emulates the Pastoral and Spiritual Care Programming at Maine Medical Center, aligning work and gaining scale and operating efficiencies where appropriate.
    • Requires flexibility to work irregular hours, including early morning (pre-clinic hours), occasional nights, week-ends and provide support to special events as necessary.
    • Must have a valid driver’s license, be able to drive and have a vehicle available for business use.
