Position Title: ESOL Instructor- Adult Education
Department: Adult Education
Reports to: Director of Adult Education
Summary: South Portland Adult Education is a member of the statewide system of more than 100 connected adult learning programs and centers across the state of Maine. SPAE offers programming in four major categories:
ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) courses provide adult multilingual learners quality study and practice in English speaking, reading, writing, and listening skills.
Workforce Training courses help prepare adult learners by providing the modern skills training necessary for new careers, promotions, and other career advancement.
College Transitions courses through the Maine College and Career Access program assist adults of all ages wishing to make the transition into college-level courses.
HiSET®, the High School Equivalency test for the state of Maine, helps adults complete their high school education and move forward in their college and career goals.
South Portland Adult Education believes that all adult learners are able to obtain the knowledge and skills necessary for post-secondary education, career, and citizenship. Adult learners of all backgrounds are welcomed, included, and respected as they participate in relevant and accessible high quality learning experiences to help them reach their fullest potential.
This teaching position will provide ESOL instruction to adult students. The instructor will use a set curriculum as well as supplement with outside materials to plan, organize and implement an appropriate instructional program for adult ESOL learners that guides and encourages students to develop and fulfill their academic potential while using current teaching strategies and adult learning theories. SPAE offers ESOL levels 1-6; classes are held M-Th 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. ESOL classes typically take place for 2 hrs twice/week.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Prepare written lessons and outlines to use in class and for homework that effectively cover curriculum and are an appropriate level of difficulty. Lessons should include focus on speaking, listening, reading, and writing. Use digital learning resources.
Communicate regularly with students about their progress and determine the need for additional reinforcement or adjustments to instructional plans/techniques/goals.
Employ and implement a classroom structure and consistency to encourage student responsibility, cooperation and mutual respect consistent with program policies and procedures.
Perform various administrative duties such as taking attendance, organizing the classroom supplies and materials, and responding to emails and WhatsApp from staff and students in a timely manner.
Collaborate with the Program Coordinator and the Director regarding the needs of students, instructional needs, new instructional technologies or approaches to student problems, learning or curriculum.
Attend administrative meetings to provide assistance in curriculum development, assessing student progress and performance, or to participate in the program decision-making.
Required to have prompt, regular attendance in-person and be available to work on-site, in-person during teaching hours.
Support classroom volunteer, if applicable.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Knowledge of instructional strategies that connect the curriculum to the learner
Knowledge of culturally competent teaching and ability to create a culturally competent classroom
Knowledge of instructional technologies and software, equipment, tools and devices used for presenting instruction, delivering assessments, or monitoring student progress
Skilled in planning and developing lesson plans tailored to individual students’ needs
Demonstrated ability to work well with students and staff in a professional manner
Ability to be flexible and adapt as needed
Ability to problem solve and be creative
The skill and ability to communicate - both orally and in writing
Practice of continuous professional improvement

Supervisory Responsibilities:
None
Education and/or Experience
Bachelor’s degree
Current State of Maine CHRC (fingerprinting) or be willing to acquire CHRC
Experience teaching ESOL, preferably to adults.
Preference for Maine Educator Endorsement as Adult Education Teacher or ESOL in one or more of the following endorsement areas: 100 English/language arts, 200 social studies, 300 mathematics, 350 physical science, and 395 life science, but not required.
Experience working with students with learning differences preferred, but not required.
Rate:
Rate of $30/hr
