POSITION PURPOSE:

Bigelow Laboratory, a world-class facility for Ocean Research, is seeking a Facilities Assistant Director to help manage its campus facilities, their systems, and grounds. This position will work closely with the director to both lead and support all facilities activities, including providing leadership to the facilities team, assisting in day-to-day management duties, as assigned, providing good order and maintenance of all campus facilities, equipment, and vehicles, and assisting with capital projects, as assigned. In the absence of the Director, the Assistant is responsible for the Department.

 

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Second-in-Command and responsible for all Facilities staff under the Director. Direct supervision, as assigned

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS [education, knowledge, skills, abilities, experience)

 
  • 5 years of Facilities/technical experience (including plumbing, electrical and HVAC)
  • Supervisory experience
  • Valid Driver's License
  • Ability to operate facilities equipment (snow removal, property maintenance)
Preferred qualifications:
  • Master Plumber/ journeyman
  • HVAC Certification
  • Building controls and automation systems
  • General knowledge marine operations and boat mechanical servicing
  • OSHA 10

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

Assists the Director with facilities planning, management, and maintenance.

Provides high-level administrative support to the Director and to the other department heads including managing maintenance schedules, custodial schedules, oversight and providing opinions on technical needs of the facilities, and providing general support services for facilities staff including coordinating with human resources, finance, and data and technology

Assists the Director with project management functions for capital projects

Assists the Director with management of the custodial staff and ensuring the “Residence” and all “housing” is serviceable and managed to standard for incoming and outgoing guests

Assists the Director in developing the capital improvements program including planning, designing, contracting, construction, and program evaluation of capital projects. 1, 3, 5- and 10-year capital plans.

Represents the department in the Director’s absence or at their request

Assists the Director with managing the “on-call” plan

Performs other related duties, as assigned

Sufficient physical strength to permit lifting and moving of heavy objects

Occasional exposure to a variety of weather conditions

Exposure to heated/air-conditioned and ventilated facilities

Exposure to buildings in which a variety of chemical substances are used for cleaning, instruction, and/or operation of equipment

Operates heavy equipment owned or rented by the lab, as assigned

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
 

The person in this position will need to respond to building emergencies on a 24-hour basis.

 


The salary range for this position is $59,000 - $73,000, with a generous benefits package including health care, retirement contribution, and paid time off.
