Job Summary
Bowdoin College has a full-time, academic year, benefits-eligible Laboratory Instructor position available beginning of Summer 2025. The Chemistry Department is looking for an enthusiastic, self-motivated individual to work closely with supervising faculty to teach laboratory sections in courses including introductory and environmental chemistry.
Responsibilities include experimental design, laboratory preparation (the generation of laboratory handouts, assembling chemicals, maintaining equipment/instrumentation, and providing for the collection and disposal of all laboratory waste), presenting pre-lab lectures, supervising laboratory sections, scaffolding exploratory student mini-projects, supervising student assistants, providing guidance about data analysis and scientific writing, and grading pre-lab assignments and laboratory reports.
Successful applicants will join a supportive chemistry department comprised of nine faculty members, six laboratory instructors, an instrumentation specialist, and an academic coordinator.
Pay and Benefits:
- The salary range for this position is expected to be: $58,000 – $64,000.

Education/Skills Requirements
Required:
- Bachelors degree in chemistry or biochemistry
- Excellent oral and written communications skills
- Strong organizational skills and problem-solving abilities
Preferred:
- Masters in chemistry or biochemistry.
Experience Requirements and/or Equivalents
Required:
- 2-5 years of experience with laboratory techniques used in introductory chemistry and environmental chemistry.
- Ability to provide individual and group instruction with sensitivity to different learning styles.
Preferred:
- Experience with modern instrumentation, especially that used in materials and environmental chemistry, and teaching experience highly valued.

Standard Work Days and Hours
- Lab hours are typically Monday-Friday beginning around 7:45 am and ending by 5:30 pm.
- Some weekends or evening hours may be required.
- This is an exempt position requiring time commitment necessary to satisfactorily complete job requirements.
- This is a full-time, academic year round position (40 hours/42 weeks, 0.81 FTE).
