Job Summary:
The Emergency Department Paramedic is responsible for performing quality patient care in an expanded in-hospital scope of practice in accordance with Maine EMS Treatment Protocols, Maine EMS PIFT protocols, physician orders, procedures, and established standards and administrative protocols. This position works under the guidance of the ED Medical Director and Nurse Director, ED.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Supports and promotes the mission and values of Covenant Health Ministry.
- Independently manages ESI Level 4 & 5 patients after triage
- Collaboratively manages ESI Level 1,2,3 patients with co-assigned RN.
- Charge RN will delegate assignments which may be reassigned or co-assigned based on acuity.
- Perform standard assessments using basic and complex equipment, identifying patient care priorities.
- Reassess patient status/needs at appropriate intervals and report changes/needs to RN or ED Physician.
- Works collaboratively with all members of the ED team to provide safe evidence-based care to all ED patients.
- Delivers care within the Paramedic Scope of Practice
- Enteral and Parenteral Medications, Oxygen Administration/ETCO2, IV/IO, Phlebotomy, US Guided IV, 12-Lead EKG, Monitoring, AED/Manual Defibrillation, Transport Monitored Patients, Assist with transport of critical patients, CPR, Manual Ventilation, BLS Airway Placement, OG/NG Tube Placement, Foley Catheter Placement, Straight Cath, Splinting, Orthoglass, Orthopedic Devices, Hemorrhage Control, Tourniquets, Bandaging, Hemostatic Agents, Wound Care, Wound Irrigation, Suture Removal, Staple Removal, Specimen Collection Swabs, Ear Irrigation, NIHSS, Initiate Full Spinal Precautions, Immobilize Patients with Long Backboard, Receive Report (radio, phone, face-to-face), Morgan Lens, Blood Glucose Analysis, Discharge Instructions.
- Provider Must be at Bedside to Perform the Following:
- Advanced airway management, Supraglottic Airway, Direct and Video Laryngoscopy, Endotracheal Intubation (Oral or Nasal), Transcutaneous Pacing, Synchronized Cardioversion.
- ED Paramedics must demonstrate adequate competency before independently practicing the above skills.
- Precepts new staff and peers.
- Actively participates in quality initiatives and performance improvement to improve patient outcomes.
- Maintains required certifications, licenses, and competencies.
- Supporting student learning is a shared responsibility. Every team member is expected to contribute to creating a welcoming environment and to actively assist students in their educational experience, regardless of their specific role.

Job Requirements
Job Knowledge and Skills
- Ability to work in a fast-paced, often stressful situation.
- Good written and verbal communication skills.
- Strong understanding of medical terminology.
- Crisis Prevention Institute (CPI) training preferred or obtained before completion of orientation.
- Temporary/Agency staff - CPI is preferred at the time of hire or obtained onsite at the first opportunity, preferably within 2 weeks of start.
- The ability to speak, read, write, and understand written instructions in English is required.
Education and Experience
- Successful completion of Paramedic level training required.
- Current Maine State licensed Paramedic required.
- ACLS, PALS, and BLS Certification required.
- Maine PIFT Certification preferred.
- Advanced Paramedic Certifications preferred (CCEMT-P, FP-C)
- Five years of Paramedic experience required.

Comp Range:
$24.95 - $34.36Rate of pay displayed reflects the beginning of the pay scale. At the time of an offer, determination of your offer will reflect your skills and experience as it relates to the position.
