Job Summary
The Security Officer provides support through the Campus Communications Center and patrols the College campus on foot, bicycle, or in a security vehicle. The officer is responsible for maintaining a safe and secure environment for students, faculty, staff, alumni, visitors, and property. Key responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Conducting daily patrols and walkthroughs of campus buildings and grounds, including locking and unlocking buildings and inspecting fire and access control alarm systems
- Monitoring the condition of campus buildings and taking steps to prevent damage or theft, as well as identifying and reporting hazards such as broken lights or unsafe conditions during patrols
- Investigating incidents, crimes, and complaints involving the College or its community members, and ensuring compliance with established regulations and policies
- Operating the Campus Security Communications Center by monitoring alarms, responding to complaints and requests, and coordinating response efforts by communicating with patrol officers via radio or other means
- Maintaining detailed and accurate records as it pertains to incidents, activities, and communications
Compensation:
- The hourly rate for this position is $20.94 per hour
- This position is eligible for overtime and shift/weekend differential
- New employees of the college are eligible for a $1,000 sign-on bonus, paid as follows: $250 paid out at the first check, $250 paid out after 90 days, and the remaining $500 paid out after 6 months

Education/Skills Requirements
- High school diploma or GED equivalent required; Associate’s degree in criminal justice or related field preferred
- Current CPR and First Aid Certification (or willing to obtain upon employment)
- A valid driver’s license and the ability to meet the requirements of the College’s Motor Vehicle Use Policy required
- Attendance at a Campus Security Officer Academy
- Working knowledge of various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems
- Ability to work three regularly scheduled, 120 hours (18 months full-time equivalent) as a Bowdoin College Security Officer I (of which 1,040 hours as a Museum Security Officer may be applied toward this requirement)
- Demonstrated proficiency in Patrol and Communications Center operations (a minimum of 96 hrs annually in each discipline is expected to maintain an acceptable level of proficiency)
- Ability to maintain at least one approved area of special expertise (e.g., Field Training Officer, crime prevention, MOAB, defensive tactics, drug recognition, CPR/First Aid Instructor)
- Ability to design, implement and maintain a self-initiated community service project of substantial value to the Bowdoin community that enhances campus safety and security
- Ability to successfully complete the Maine Campus Security Online Training Center courses
Experience Requirements and/or Equivalents
- This is an entry-level position and no prior work experience is required
- At least 1 year of relevant experience in safety and security field preferred

Standard Work Days and Hours
- This is an onsite, full-time position working 40 hours/52 weeks (1.0 FTE)
- Typical work schedule consists of five 8-hour shifts scheduled on a monthly basis in accordance with the needs of the department. Additional hours may be required for shift coverage and the Officer may be subject to call in or may be required to stay beyond regular assigned hours due to operational needs
- The Officer may be required to work weekend hours, black out days, and during weather emergencies, as well as during significant College events (e.g., Commencement, Reunion, sporting events, concerts)
