SUMMARY: The Sundry Custodian is the primary person who covers for head custodians through the district when a head custodian is out sick, on vacation, or unable to be in their building during their normal shift. When not filling in for a Head Custodian, the Sundry Custodian is to report to the maintenance department to assist the maintenance department with their day-to-day activities.
SALARY: $19.18 - $20.71
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES :

- Based out of the Dingley Building/Need current driver’s license & reliable transportation
- Performs seasonal ground work (snow, lawn, playground equipment).
- Assists visiting public in utilizing the facilities with directions within the building and in obtaining and setting up needed equipment.
- Maintains building and grounds security in the buildings.
- During summer months move furniture, strip, scrub & wax floors then return the furniture.
- Other duties may be assigned.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:
High school diploma or general education degree (GED). Prior experience in custodial work required.
LANGUAGE SKILLS:
Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine correspondence. Ability to speak effectively with other employees and students.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:
Ability to add and subtract two digit numbers and to multiply and divide with 10s and 100s. Ability to perform these operations using units of American money and weight measurement, volume, and distance.
REASONING ABILITY:
Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in standardized situations. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
OTHER SKILLS and ABILITIES: Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, staff, and the community. Ability to perform duties with awareness of all district requirements and School Committee policies.

Occasionally the employee will lift and/or move up to 90 lbs such as salt and bulk furniture. The employee will sometimes push/pull items such as tables, bleachers, and scrubbing machines. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works indoors and will occasionally work outdoors. The employee will work near or with moving mechanical equipment. The employee may occasionally work with toxic or caustic chemicals such as petroleum products, degreasers, and sprays. The employee must be able to meet deadlines with severe time constraints. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.

Head Custodian
- Instructs custodians verbally and in writing on building and grounds, custodial and routine preventive maintenance activities.
- Assists the Facilities Director and Facilities Supervisor in assigning and scheduling additional time for custodians.
- Is the primary point of contact for administration & staff for all custodial needs.
- Available as needed after hours for any emergency response needed at any LPS building or property.
- Maintains the inventory of custodial/maintenance supplies and equipment.
- Cleans and preserves designated spaces, equipment, etc. in the building.
- Performs routine maintenance and repairs for plumbing, custodial equipment, building structure, and hardware. Also, be able to request assistance from facilities for work beyond their capabilities.
- Assists the visiting public who utilizes the facilities with directions within the building and with obtaining and setting up/taking down needed equipment.
- Rake, sweep, shovel snow, and maintains ground cleanliness and equipment.
- Performs normal operator adjustments and service to facility equipment such as but not limited to, compressors, heating systems, unit ventilators, and fans and maintains records on operational and maintenance activities.
- Maintains building and grounds security.
- Monitors fuel oil to maintain a safe fuel level where needed.
- Coordinates snow and ice removal so schools can open safely and on time after each storm by calling in custodians as needed.
- Actively involved with the Integrated Pest Management Program by providing follow-up reports on pest sightings, trap monitors, and pest reports. May work with the school nurse on similar issues as well
- Provides coverage for all areas in the building when a custodian calls in sick or is on vacation if there is no substitute custodian available.
- Checks all areas of the school building for proper cleaning and maintenance. Notifies the Facilities Supervisor of any below-standard areas.
- Maintains custodial cleaning equipment in good and safe working order.
- Responsible for assisting with the supervising of the custodial staff in the building. Duties include but are not limited to reviewing time sheets, performance corrections, employee evaluations, and other similar tasks.
- Maintains Safety Data Sheet (SDS) notebook to ensure compliance with State and Federal Laws.
- Assist with receiving deliveries and moving items to their proper location in the building
- During summer months move furniture, strip, scrub & wax floors, and return furniture as well as other “deep cleaning” processes as identified by the head custodian, facilities supervisor, or facilities director
- Painting, assembly of furniture, moving of employee belongings within the building, and other similar tasks as needed.
