Seeking an energetic, creative, and master early childhood English language teacher to support young dual language learners in our Pre-Kindergarten classrooms located in both Portland Public Schools and Portland Public Schools/community partner PreK programs. The successful candidate will:
1) Provide and support early language development opportunities and appropriate instruction aligned with the WIDA Early English Language Development Standards and Maine’s Early Learning and Development Standards;
2) Collaborate and consult with early childhood education teachers to build capacity in facilitating the development of English in all language domains and to maximize student participation and progress in overall development;
3) Provide ongoing professional learning opportunities as necessary on dual language development, acculturation and effective practices in teaching multilingual children;
4) Use student data and language proficiency assessments to inform instruction and programming support for multilingual children;
5) Assist educational teams to distinguish English language acquisition from a language disability, as well as cultural norms from behavioral concerns;
6) Promote family and parent engagement;
7) Work collaboratively with PreK Director, Principals, Multilingual Parent and Community Specialists, and other district staff
A successful candidate will have: excellent interpersonal and intercultural communication skills in order to collaborate effectively with all early childhood education teachers, students, families, and other educational support staff; the ability to provide ongoing staff development and leadership as a specialist of dual language learners; expertise in building relationships with multilingual families; and experience in promoting the acquisition of language in a PreK setting.
