SCHOOL COUNSELOR - KCS

This position is scheduled to begin in August 2024.

As an Elementary School Counselor, you will deliver measurable results in helping students overcome challenges that impede their learning and assist them in making academic, career and social-emotional gains.

Reports to: School Principal

Qualifications: An ability to connect with students, teachers/staff and families to best support students being able to overcome any challenges in order to achieve academically. Focus on students’ needs in the areas of academic, social emotional and career through the ASCA model. Master’s Degree in School Counseling. Must possess a Maine certification and/or license in School Counseling. Previous experience working with elementary school children and staff, including the ability to teach classroom lessons. Strong communication skills and adherence to appropriate boundaries and confidentiality.

Responsibilities:

Student Centered

  • Meet with students individually for short term support
  • Collaborate with teachers, families and outside providers to best support students’ success
  • Provide Tier 1, 2 and 3 interventions to help students be successful

Communication

  • Provide small group lessons in areas of executive functioning, changing families, grief, etc.
  • Set tone for whole school social emotional learning
  • Serve as case manager for 504 students, conducting meetings and creating plans
  • Participate in grade level team meetings to address SEL and student needs
  • Deliver ASCA and CASEL based curriculum classroom lessons on topics such as Coping, Communication, perspective, empathy, etc.
  • Maintain confidentiality and appropriate boundaries with staff, students and families
  • Informs stakeholders of school counseling services and activities through newsletters

Leadership

  • Participate on committees such as Attendance and MTSSB to address student and whole school needs
  • Work with lower elementary school counselors and middle school counselors
  • Have a clear understanding of mandated reporting requirements
  • Provide Trauma Informed Care
  • Collaborates with Rotary for annual holiday party for selected students with need
  • Provides school community with necessary resources to have needs met (clothing, food, shelter, safety, etc.)
  • Additional tasks assigned by the school principal

Terms of Employment: Salary and work year to be established by the RSU 21 School Board.

Evaluation: Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the School Board’s policy on Evaluation of Professional Personnel.

This position will remain open until a qualified candidate is secured.
