Mount Desert Island Hospital (MDIH), a 25 Bed-Critical Access Hospital is seeking an experienced and strategic Director of Fiscal Services. This leadership position is responsible for overseeing the financial operations of MDIH and its affiliated entities, including Birch Bay Retirement Village, Mount Desert Management Company, and Birch Bay Village Association. The Director of Fiscal Services will ensure accurate financial reporting, compliance with regulatory requirements, and effective financial management across both non-profit and for-profit organizations with primary oversight for the annual audits and the organizations internal controls. This role also includes oversight of materials management and supply procurement to ensure cost-effective purchasing and inventory control. The Director of Fiscal Services will play a key role in supporting organizational strategy and operational efficiency.

Requirements

Financial Reporting and Compliance:

  • Oversee the preparation and consolidation of financial statements for MDIH, Birch Bay Retirement Village, and Mount Desert Management Company, ensuring compliance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).
  • Prepare and present monthly financial reports for and to the Finance Committee, providing detailed analysis and insights to support decision-making.
  • Manage the financial reporting for Birch Bay Village Association as a separate entity.
  • Ensure timely and accurate filing of IRS Form 990 for non-profit entities and Form 1120 for for-profit entities

Budgeting and Financial Planning:

  • Lead the annual budgeting process, including the development of operating and capital budgets.
  • Monitor financial performance against budgets and forecasts, providing variance analysis and actionable insights to senior leadership.

Audit and Internal Controls:

  • Coordinate annual audits with external auditors, ensuring all necessary documentation is prepared and available. Acts as the liaison for planning and scope of all audit functions and tax preparations.
  • Develop, implement, and maintain internal control policies and procedures to safeguard assets and ensure financial integrity.

Balance Sheet General Ledger Account Reconciliations:

  • Oversee the reconciliation of balance sheet general ledger accounts to ensure accuracy and completeness of financial data.
  • Investigate and resolve discrepancies in account balances, ensuring timely adjustments and compliance with accounting standards.
  • Implement and maintain reconciliation processes and documentation to support financial audits and internal controls.

Cash Flow and Treasury Management:

  • Oversee cash flow planning and ensure availability of funds as needed.
  • Investment reconciliations and monthly journal entries.
  • Manage banking relationships and monitor investment activities in accordance with organizational policies.

Materials Management and Supply Procurement:

  • Provide leadership for the Materials Management Team to ensure the use of supply procurement functions are both efficient and cost-effective. Ensure compliance with inventory management policies and procedures to optimize supply chain operations.
  • Collaborate with leadership and external resources to negotiate vendor contracts.
  • Monitor supply usage and turnover ratios and ensure compliance with procurement and spending authority policies.

Team Leadership and Development:

  • Supervise and mentor finance and materials management staff, fostering a culture of continuous improvement and professional development.
  • Collaborate with department heads and executive leadership to provide financial insights and support strategic decision-making.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting, or a related field; Master’s degree or CPA designation preferred.
  • A minimum of 7-10 years of progressive experience in financial management, with at least 5 years in a leadership role.
  • Demonstrated experience in both non-profit and for-profit financial reporting, including knowledge of IRS Form 990 and Form 1120 filing requirements.
  • Strong understanding of GAAP, financial reporting, budgeting, and internal controls.
  • Experience in materials management and supply procurement, including inventory control and vendor negotiations.
  • Proficiency in financial management software and advanced Microsoft Excel skills.
  • Excellent analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
  • Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to present complex financial information clearly and concisely.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment while maintaining attention to detail.
  • Experience in the healthcare industry and familiarity with Critical Access Hospital financial operations is highly desirable.
