The Director of Human Resources at Bigelow Laboratory for Ocean Sciences will assist the institution with managing personnel and ensure that all human resources programs and initiatives are effective, efficient, and aligned with the goals of the institution. The Director of Human Resources will address employee grievances and disputes, support employee development, enhance job satisfaction, work with VPRA to maintain institutional compliance, work on visa and immigration issues and work with leadership to design and implement HR trainings and strategies that support institutional objectives.

The ideal candidate for this role should possess an exemplary work ethic, excellent communication skills, knowledge of labor and associated tax regulations and be up to date on best practices in HR. The individual will bring to the institution the ability for strategic thinking, strong organizational skills, and outstanding interpersonal skills. The HR Director is expected to lead efforts to fully modernize Bigelow’s HR processes, implement strategies that support business growth, improve morale and employee retention, enhance safety and wellness, strengthen relationships among all staff, and promote the organization’s values. It is expected that the Director of HR may supervise others within the HR department as that department grows.


  • BA/BS degree in business, human resources or closely related field
  • Must hold the highest ethical standards and handle paperwork and issues with the highest levels of confidentiality
  • Must be compassionate, trustworthy, and empathetic with employee issues
  • Experience leading a small to mid-size HR office with a diversity of job duties; this position will require a willingness to work at many levels from routine data entry, benefits monitoring, payroll monitoring, to developing and leading strategic initiatives
  • Working knowledge and understanding of labor laws, compliance, and best employment practices
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Highly organized and ability to maintain impeccable records
  • Ability to work closely with others within the organization of varying disciplines and job duties.
  • Good problem-solving skills
  • Budget management experience and general financial acumen

  • Personable and able to meet the day-to-day challenges associated with multiple levels of tasks from payroll to human resources to compliance


This position will have multiple responsibilities associated with Human Resources and the list below is not intended to be fully comprehensive but is representative of the types of work and the projects that need to be completed.

  • Develop and implement human resources policies and strategy
  • Work with the executive team to hire staff and negotiate employee agreements
  • Ensuring compliance and lead various compliance filings such as ACA reporting, including forms 1094, 1095, census forms, Affirmative Action as well as others as needed
  • Manage employee benefits and probationary and annual performance reviews. Must be able to assist managers with responsibilities and be able to communicate expectations and follow through with timelines.
  • Balance employee concerns with policies and procedures. Must be able to exercise discretion, independent judgement, and diplomacy in communicating with staff.
  • Record keeping with the highest standards of confidentiality for all employee files. Must be able to organize and prioritize information
  • Design and administer employee training including harassment prevention, management enhancement, employee compliance, benefits renewal, and other trainings.
  • Ensure that the laboratory is in compliance with applicable federal and state employment laws, update background check processes.
  • Work with staff and is responsible for visa applications and associated filings and processes.
  • Handle worker’s compensation claims.
  • This position is hands-on, and the Director should expect to assist with administrative work as needed. Including payroll and other week-to-week tasks.


SHRM certification is preferred. This position requires a high degree of empathy and verbal skills; the applicant must be able to communicate with a broad array of individuals who have questions about laboratory policy, programs, and Human Resources. The individual must be able to enforce Bigelow policies and exchange clear and accurate information in these situations. The person in this position needs to occasionally move about in an office setting to access file cabinets, office machinery, etc. This position may need to be responsive to issues outside of normal work hours, including holidays and weekends.
