    • Location: Wiscasset, Maine
    • Reports to: President
    • Direct Reports: (2) Associate Director of Camp, (1) Camp Administrator, (80+) Summer Camp Staff
    • Schedule: Full Time, Year- round
      • Fall, Winter, Spring: Hybrid position 
      • Summer (June - August): Residential Position (Housing Provided; This position is required to reside on campus during the Summer Season)
    • Salary: $64,000 - $70,000/Annually (Based on qualifications)

Camp Chewonki Summary

Camp Chewonki comprises Boys Camp, serving about 200 boys and nonbinary campers, and Girls Camp, serving about 160 girls and nonbinary campers. Camp Chewonki runs two three-week session overnight programs for campers grades four through eight and an introductory 11-day program for campers finishing second and third grades. Camp Chewonki is a program within the Chewonki Foundation focused on connecting children with the natural world, developing community, and facilitating self-discovery. 

For more than a century, Camp Chewonki has welcomed hundreds of children and teens from across the country each summer to our breathtaking campus on Chewonki Neck. From sunlit afternoons at the waterfront to backcountry treks through pristine forests, every day is an invitation to discover, grow, and forge lasting friendships. Our programs are divided into three major divisions:

  • Camp Chewonki for Boys (grades 2–8, serving about 200 boys and non-binary campers)
    Fosters fun, friendship, and self-knowledge through outdoor activities and exciting backcountry adventures.
  • Camp Chewonki for Girls (grades 2–8, serving about 160 girls and non-binary campers)
    Cultivates confidence, curiosity, and camaraderie with immersive, hands-on experiences in nature.

Key Duties Summary

 

  • Recruitment and Enrollment

 

      • Develop and execute marketing and admissions strategies.
      • Follow up on leads and oversee enrollment activities.
      • Conduct new camper welcome calls and coordinate recruitment events.
      • Explore new markets and manage financial aid allocations.

 

  • Risk Management

 

      • Lead risk management efforts, ensuring protocols are followed and incidents are addressed reflectively.
      • Create summer schedules and collaborate with key staff on safety measures.

 

  • Relationship Management

 

      • Prioritize excellent customer service and lifetime family relationships.
      • Serve as the main contact for camp families and partner organizations.
      • Coordinate with departments for seamless participant experiences.

 

  • Budget Management

 

      • Participate in budget planning and monitor expenses to meet targets.Advocate for campus development and renewal projects.

 

  • Hiring and Staff Management

 

      • Recruit, hire, and oversee a team of year-round and seasonal staff.
      • Conduct coaching, performance reviews, and goal setting.
      • Manage the program team during summer operations.

 

  • Program and Training Management

 

      • Ensure program excellence through collaboration and oversight.
      • Develop and deliver staff training aligned with the organization’s mission and values.
      • Oversee a coherent, research-based camp curriculum to enhance camper retention.

 

  • Mission Alignment

 

    • Promote Chewonki’s mission, vision, values, DEI principles, and brand in all operations

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Must pass a Criminal Background Check including Motor Vehicle Record.
    • Valid Driver’s License approved by Chewonki’s insurance carrier.
  • Current CPR/First Aid Certification. 
  • 5+ years of Leadership roles in the camping industry. 
  • Decade + of youth program experience.  
  • 3+ years of supervisory experience. 
  • Prior experience in outdoor learning or nature based programming, preferred. 
  • Excited about creating and delivering an educational, aligned, and fun model of camp that supports and encourages children equitably.
  • Proficient in the use of Google Workspace.
  • Willingness to learn family management database systems, e.g. Salesforce and CampMinder.
  • Committed to excellence.

  • Comfortable public speaking in  a variety of audiences.
  • Provide clear and timely communication for families and staff.
  • Knowledge and implementation of current best practices for group management and social/emotional learning.
  • Understands the model and value of outdoor learning and place-based education. 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Must be able to lift up to 30 lb at a time.
  • Must be able to work in an active, outdoor environment in a variety of weather conditions.
  • Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
  • Willingness to live in a camp setting and work irregular hours.
  • Must be able to travel as needed.
