Description Position Summary
MS3 is a 40 Bed /16 Telemetry – Med/Surg unit with a concentration of post-surgical patients and Oncology care. This department is on a self-scheduling model, with normal shifts 12 hours in duration.
The health care work force of the future should have the knowledge and skills to provide patient-centered, community-focused, cost-effective, clinically-effective, coordinated care. To do these things successfully, the work force must be competent, flexible, and adaptive to changes in health care delivery and technology. The Registered Nurse is responsible for performance of complex, individualized, family oriented nursing care in accordance with policies and procedures under the direct supervision of a charge/shift leader RN.

All Register Nurse I positions participate in the Nurse Residency Program:

The SMHC Nurse Residency Program, developed by Vizient and the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN), is an evidence-based, year-long program aimed at assisting the new graduate nurse in the transition from academics to practice; to help develop critical thinking, decision-making, and clinical skills to become a successful partner in the healthcare team. The program is used by over 200 hospitals nationwide, including notable hospitals such as New England’s own Yale-New Haven Hospital and Dartmouth-Hitchcock.
Upon hire as a new-to-practice nurse, you will be enrolled into the SMHC Nurse Residency Program. The curriculum is delivered in addition to nursing orientation.
Upon completion of the program, the nurse resident will:

  • Make the transition from advanced beginner to competent professional nurse in the clinical setting
  • Develop effective clinical decision-making skills
  • Provide clinical nursing leadership at the point of care
  • Strengthen your commitment to nursing as a profession
  • Incorporate evidence-based outcomes into clinical practice

Required Minimum Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs)
1. Current licensure from the Maine State Board of Nursing as an R.N. required.
2. BSN preferred.
3. BLS and ability to perform CPR required.
4. ACLS preferred.
