Dining Service - Smith Union
Job Summary
Located in Brunswick, Maine, Bowdoin College boasts a student population of almost 2000. Our Dining Services Department makes everything from scratch and are consistently rated in the top 10 for college dining! We have our own butcher shop, bakeshop, and organic garden that all supply food to our two dining halls and three retail locations.
The Dining Operations Lead supports daily dining operations at Smith Union, with a primary focus on Jack Magee’s Grill. This role includes taking and processing customer orders, preparing food, operating point-of-sale systems, and ensuring a clean, well-stocked service environment. The position also provides occasional support to other retail operations, including the Bowdoin Express Convenience Store and The Café. Key responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Pleasantly greet patrons and ensure order accuracy and timely service
- Prepare sandwiches and wraps for the Fast Track line, assist with prep work for linch at Magee’s Grill, handle barista duties at The Café, and provide coverage at the Bowdoin Express Convenience store as needed
- Follow proper food handling, stocking, and storage procedures, as well as take and record refrigerator/freezer temperature readings
- Operate registers and computerized ordering systems accurately, as well as train new staff in these systems
- Support kitchen cleaning and dishwasher operation, and adhere to safety and sanitation guidelines, including related documentation
- Prepare end-of-the-day shift reports detailing Magee’s sales and Fast Track counts
Compensation:
- The hourly rate for this position is $21.00 per hour, and the role is eligible for overtime and shift/weekend differential
- Shift differentials include a 10% premium for 2nd shift, a 15% premium for 3rd shift, and an additional $1.00 per hour for weekend hours
- New employees receive a $500 sign-on bonus (½ paid at first check and ½ paid after 90 days contingent upon meeting eligibility requirements).

Education/Skills Requirements
- High school diploma or GED required; Associate’s or vocational/technical school degree preferred
- Current ServSafe certification (or willingness to obtain within 6 months of employment)
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, Word)
- Self-motivated with strong decision-making and organizational abilities
- Effective verbal and written communication skills
- Experience with cash registers and basic computer systems
- Capable of working independently while contributing to a team-oriented setting in a fast-paced environment
- Commitment to maintaining high standards of personal hygiene and cleanliness
Experience Requirements and/or Equivalents
- At least 1 year of work experience in the food service, retail sales, hospitality or closely related industry
- Prior in purchasing, inventory management and receiving experiencehighly preferred

Standard Work Days and Hours
- This is a full-time, year-round position, working 40 hours per week for 52 weeks per year (1.0 FTE). The role includes occasional overtime, weekends, holidays, and weather emergencies, as well as coverage during major college events such as Parents Weekend, Commencement, and Reunions.
- The regular work schedule for this position is Monday – Friday from 7:00 am to 3:00 pm
