Job Summary
In collaboration with Bowdoin programs utilizing marine vessels, the Research Vessel Captain is responsible for operating 16 to 28 foot vessels for classes and research based out of Bowdoin College’s Schiller Coastal Studies Center in Harpswell, Maine.
Situated on a former farm, the Schiller Coastal Studies Center at Bowdoin College offers 2.5 miles of rocky shoreline and 118 acres of coastal spruce-pine forest and fields. With access to the Gulf of Maine, a variety of natural habitats, and well-equipped science and residential facilities, students and faculty can study biology, earth and oceanographic science, and environmental science.
The hourly rate for this position is $35 per hour.
Education/Skills Requirements
- High School or GED equivalent
- A valid driver’s license and the ability to meet the requirements of the College’s Motor Vehicle Use Policy
- Merchant Mariner Credential – National Master of Self-Propelled vessels less than 100 GRT or can obtain by 7/1/2025
- Teamwork: Ability to work collaboratively within a team and contribute positively to the team’s operations and goals
- Detail-oriented: High level of attention to detail to ensure accuracy of logs, operations, reports, and other documents
- Adaptability: Ability to work in a dynamic environment, adapting to changes and managing plans and priorities
Experience Requirements and/or Equivalents
- 3 to 5 years of experience in a charter boat captain capacityhighly preferred
- Vessel operating experience in Casco Bay, Maine highly preferred
Standard Work Days and Hours
- This is a casual, part-time, non-benefit eligible position working less than 19 hours/week.
- The busy season is between May – November.
- There may be requirement to work evenings, weekend and holidays.
