Law Enforcement Liaison

(Crisis Alternative Response Specialist)

The Opportunity Alliance (TOA) is seeking a Crisis Alternative Response Specialist (Law Enforcement Liaison) to join our Mobile Crisis Team (MCT). This role is crucial in providing immediate crisis intervention and stabilization services for individuals experiencing mental health crises, diverting them to appropriate services rather than the criminal justice system. The position is based out of the Cumberland County Sheriff's Office.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Direct engagement with individuals in crisis, offering assessments, interventions, and follow-up.
  • Conduct risk assessments to mitigate harm to self or others.
  • Co-respond to calls with law enforcement for targeted mental health responses.
  • Independently respond to community needs when safe to do so.
  • Provide de-escalation and appropriate mental health responses, ensuring individuals receive the right treatment.
  • Collaborate with families, community members, and support systems for effective follow-up.
  • Participate in staff meetings, foster positive team dynamics, and utilize self-care strategies.
  • Deliver services both in-person and through telehealth methods.

Schedule: Full-time, 40 hours/week position. Set schedule will be determined by the program. Some evenings and weekends may be required.

Location: Based out of the Cumberland County Sherriff's Office – Portland, ME.

Work is done in person (in the office and, or community) with potential for some remote work.

Required Qualifications:

  • Associates degree required. Must be able to achieve MHRT-CSP (crisis services provider) certification within 30 days of hire.
  • Must be able to meet all TOA MCT and Law Enforcement setting standards and qualifications as required.
  • Must demonstrate the ability to collaborate effectively within a team, navigating various systems, rules, policies, and leadership styles across diverse cultural perspectives.
  • Must be able to demonstrate a belief that recovery is possible and maintain agency/SAMHSA perspectives of recovery and treatment that is guided by the needs of the client.
  • Experience with crisis intervention, psychiatric triage and advocacy preferred.
  • Must be able to maintain composure and respond appropriately in high-pressure, life-threatening, traumatic, or stressful situations.
  • Computer proficiency in Microsoft Office, E-mail, and the Internet required.
  • Must be able to successfully pass a criminal background, child protective service check & sex offender check.
  • Must not be on the state or federal suspension and disbarment list.
  • Normal office conditions such as sitting, with occasional standing, walking, reaching, stooping, bending, kneeling, crouching, typing and lifting up to 10 pounds.
  • Driving may be necessary to attend meetings and trainings and for the occasional need to meet with clients offsite and within the program service area. This may include transportation of clients or driving to agency location to complete work. A good driving record is required.
