Under the direction of the Emergency Department Director, the ED Nursing supervisor is responsible for the supervision of the Emergency Department. They assume responsibility for the coordination of age-appropriate patient care activities in the absence of the ED director, utilizing knowledge of standards, policies and procedures outlined for the facility. They coordinate nursing care activities within the nursing services in the absence of the ED Director. They must maintain a high degree of confidentiality and support the mission, vision, and values of the organization.

Requirements

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

  • Graduate of an accredited school of nursing, BSN Preferred
  • Current licensure as a registered nurse in the State of Maine or Authorization to Practice pending licensure by endorsement
  • BCLS, ACLS, PALS
  • NRP within 6 months of hire
  • 2-4 years minimum acute care experience
  • Excellent assessment, communication, computer, and documentation skills needed
  • Ability to function independently
  • Ability to act rapidly and efficiently in emergency situations
  • Demonstrates leadership skills with strengths in communications, organization, management of conflict and problem solving

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Assesses the quality and appropriateness of patient care in the Emergency Department based on adequacy of staffing related to patient acuity and nursing staff level of competency and age specific care requirements. Will delegate unit specific tasks to ED Charge Nurse.
  • Will address any staffing and/or performance gaps to ED Director and Administrative Nursing Supervisor and implement real-time solutions.
  • Leads Bi-Weekly Huddles within the Emergency Department to evaluate progression of Unit Specific Strategic Goals. Encourages Staff Members to elevate concerns with current unit processes.
  • Available to ED Director for Resource Training Bi- Monthly inclusive of Performance Management for all staff members and Coordinates and Participates in Interviews for New Staff Candidates.
  • Will engage in Resource Rounding on ED patients to elicit real-time feedback and successfully mitigate service recovery efforts.
  • Demonstrates decision-making skills establishing priorities and initiating action.
  • Ensures that patient charts are complete. Performing charts reviews and audits as requested by ED Director and DECH Quality Department.
  • Performs shift to shift medication reconciliation daily.
  • Meets with Pharmacy and Nursing Staff to reconcile medication variances timely. Reports to ED Director, CNO and Pharmacist any trends in medication discrepancies by Department and Staff Member.
  • Collaborates with ED Director and Nursing Educator to develop ED Specific Orientation Procedures and Annual Skills Testing.
  • Meets with ED Orientees and their Preceptors on a scheduled basis to evaluate orientation progress and identify new goals for the preceptor and their orientee. Communicates with ED Director, Nursing Educator and CNO regarding progress of new hires.
  • Serves on Emergency Preparedness Committee.
  • Works collaboratively with ED Director and CNO to update ED Specific Policies with focus on Triage, Assessments and Documentation Practices.
  • Works in collaboration with the ED Director/Chief Nursing Officer in developing best practices focusing on patient satisfaction goals.
  • Provides appropriate education to the patient and/or family regarding individualized plan of care
  • Promotes effective communication, teamwork, professional relationships, and positive attitudes among physicians, staff, and personnel.
  • Coordinates all aspects of nursing care to achieve desired patient outcomes
  • Adheres to Standard Blood and Body Fluid Precautions
  • Uses equipment and supplies in a safe and efficient manner
  • Documents all care given and patient response
  • Informs physician of reportable changes in patient status
  • Remains current in practice through attendance at in-services, seminars, and workshops, and through relevant reading
  • Initiates and present in-service education programs based on seminars and workshops attended outside the hospital or in areas of interest
  • Participates in Organ/Tissue Donation Program
  • Participates in the implementation of planned unit changes and activities in collaboration with the Department Director
  • Ensures variance reporting process occurs in accordance with policy
  • Promotes positive community relations
  • Seeks out needed information by staying informed and involved by attending meetings, reading memos, policies, meeting minutes, newsletters, email, and other appropriate information in a timely manner.
  • Uses patient handling equipment appropriate to the needs of the individual patient in keeping with the Safe Patient and Handling and Movement Policy.
  • Reliable attendance and punctuality, including observing appropriate break times and extending a scheduled shift when necessary to meet patient demands
  • Performs duties in a safe manner, in compliance with all safety policies and procedures
  • Complies with the Code of Conduct and all appropriate codes, policies, and procedures
  • Other duties, as assigned, that are relevant to the position and department

PHYSICAL EFFORT AND ENVIRONMENT

Clinical: Frequently lifts up to 35 pounds independently. Frequently pushes/pulls 100 pounds using mechanical and other assistive devices. Walks, stands, kneels, bends most of the time. Exhibits fine motor skills and manual dexterity necessary to perform the essential job functions of the position. Visual acuity correctable to 20/20. Color vision is necessary. Normal hearing acuity.

QUALITY IMPROVEMENT

  • Maintains current knowledge of the hospital-wide Quality Improvement Program.
  • Collaborates with management to improve the effectiveness of the department through the Quality Improvement plans and processes.
  • Participates in the departmental and hospital-wide Quality Improvement activities as directed by the manager.
  • Reports all Quality Improvement activities, measurements, and results according to the established reporting structure.
