The Collections Coordinator is responsible for the prompt collection of all assigned past due low to extreme risk accounts as well as proper handling of collection situations, i.e. bankruptcy, escalated collection activity, etc.  Portfolio tends to include high risk, high balance accounts. 

The position requires the ability to negotiate alternative payment terms to effectively resolve and maintain customer and merchant relationships; ability to work independently to evaluate account relationships and manage ongoing delinquencies within the approved authority matrix and credit policy.   

The Collections Coordinator will act as primary contact for communications with the merchants regarding recourse chargebacks and contractors as they move through the various stages of delinquency, with a high degree of autonomy.   


General Responsibilities:  

  • Performs collection activities for assigned accounts including outbound contact and all correspondence 

  • Contact customers to identify and resolve collection issues using appropriate collection tools to track and document accurately & promptly   

  • Ensures all accounts have been properly worked and managed to department standards prior to the execution of demand notices and/or account suspension  

  • Works independently in a self-directed manner and requires little supervision 

  • Focuses on maintaining customer and merchant relationships, detects & identifies problematic accounts in all stages of delinquency  

  • Effectively communicates with customers, merchants, other Capital One departments, attorneys, outside agencies, town/city officials, etc. regarding pertinent customer issues 

  • Assists with preparing debtor accounts with department’s IRU division; independently seeks out new information through skip tracing efforts 

  • Effectively communicates mechanic lien language with property owners as appropriate and in a timely fashion; negotiates payment terms as needed to maintain customer relationship and compliance with customer’s contract 

  • Research & reconcile customer payment history as necessary 

  • Gathers and assesses relevant financial information about the customer’s business or personal business and credit history. 

  • Achieves performance standards and goals of the position to include demonstration of understanding and compliance of company’s credit risk policy 

  • Escalates non-standard issues appropriately, i.e., bankruptcy insolvency, ownership changes, etc. 

  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment 

  • Demonstrated leadership ability 

  • Ability to effectively communicate (both verbal and written) with customer, internal and external contacts.  

  • Demonstrated ability to research, analyze and offer and negotiate solutions to resolve issues. 

  • Fundamental understanding of bankruptcy and mechanic lien law 

  • Proficiency using general business office equipment 


Basic Qualifications:  

  • High School Diploma, GED, or equivalent certification 

  • At least 1 year of experience in Consumer or Commercial Collections   

  • At least 1 year of experience with Microsoft Office or Google Suite 


Preferred Qualifications:  

  • Bachelor’s Degree or military experience 


Work at Home Technology Requirements:

  • A secure home office environment that is free from background noise and distractions

  • A reliable private internet connection that is not supplied by use cellular data (hot spot) 

    • Cable or fiber connections are preferred 

    • Internet service download speeds must be at least 5 mbps, with 10+ mbps preferred - check your download speed using a speed test. A sample one can be found here.  To test your home internet from your personal computer at home, type into the web browser of your personal computer. 

    • Sustained ability to maintain latency less than 250 ms in voice calls is required

  • Hard wired connectivity is preferred, any use of wireless connectivity must be Private (non-public) and password protected through WPA2-PSK (AES) encryption. If you have any questions about your encryption, please consult with your internet provider

    • A private network is password protected where you have ownership or line of site to every device on the network
