This is a skilled labor position in the operation of light to heavy automotive and non-automotive construction equipment. This position requires the ability to take charge of assigned tasks with very minimal oversight.




Work is done under the direct supervision of the Public Work’s Foreman and general supervision of the Director of Public Works.




  1. Safely and efficiently operate the Town’s trucks and construction or power equipment of various sizes and weights in the loading, hauling and unloading of various equipment, materials, and supplies.


  1. Perform routine inspections and preventative maintenance on assigned equipment and refer defects or needed repairs to his/her immediate supervisor.


  1. Performs all duties in conformance to appropriate safety and security standards set by OSHA and Town policies and regulations.


  1. Performs required labor involved in construction and maintenance projects as part of a crew, including but not limited to; pavement cutting, ditch digging, manhole and line cleaning, main and pipe repair, laying and backfilling.


  1. Responsible for keeping the operating equipment clean and in good operating condition.


  1. Makes minor repairs and adjustments and servicing such as oil and greasing on

     specialized equipment and adjustments to belts.


  1. Performs related work as assigned.






Education and Experience


High School Diploma or equivalent. A minimum of two (2) years in a combination of experience and/or training in the operation of light to heavy equipment.


Necessary Special Requirement


Must possess a valid State of Maine Class II (B) motor vehicle license or have the ability to obtain one within the six (6) month probationary period.


Necessary knowledge, skills, & ability


  1. Thorough knowledge of the operation, use and maintenance of the particular type of equipment which is assigned to him/her.


  1. Considerable knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions necessary in the operations of light to heavy equipment along with the ability to communicate such hazards and precautions to the work crew.


  1. Ability to operate various trucks and equipment safely around obstructions and personnel.


  1. Ability to understand and carry out written and oral instructions.


  1. Ability to work long hours operating various pieces of equipment in adverse weather conditions.


  1. Demonstrate the ability to direct a group of workers and a specific operation.


  1. The ability to take initiative in maintenance and construction matters and problems.


  1. Knowledge of geographical area to which assigned.


  1. The ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, co-workers, officials and the general public.


  1. The ability to present issues to the Director and designated assistants in a clear

     and precise manor, either written or verbally.


  1. Availability for on-call rotation within the department.






The following equipment may utilized in this position; bulldozer, scraper, sweeper, excavator, dump truck and plow truck. Mechanical hand tools for vehicle maintenance, shovels, picks, and brooms.

The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Requires full range of body motion, to include bending at waist and full use of lower extremities and back muscles. Requires excellent levels of equilibrium when positioned on slippery wet or erratically moving surfaces. Possess accurate depth perception, as well as near/far vision of 20/40, uncorrected or corrected and the ability to distinguish colors. Ability to hear within three feet and on the telephone. Possess fine motor dexterity in both hands.

The noise level in the work environment can be extremely loud at the Public Work’s job sites or in the maintenance garage. This position also encounters and must significant inclement weather.
